Monday 11. May 2009 - Honor Granted by the New York Chapter of the Prestigious Society of Professional Journalists

The Forward, America’s most influential Jewish weekly newspaper, has been selected as a finalist in the 2009 Deadline Club Awards.
The awards are distributed each year by The Deadline Club in New York, a chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. The group’s members include writing professionals in broadcast, print, and online journalism.
The judges selected The Forward in the “Newspaper Category for Reporting” by Nathaniel Popper about problems in the kosher meat industry and its coverage of the Agriprocessors scandal. The Forward is also a finalist for the “Public Service Award for Reporting” by Popper and editorial director J.J. Goldberg.
“We are excited and humbled to be chosen as a finalist for these prestigious awards. We broke the Agriprocessors kosher slaughterhouse story and we are honored to be recognized for our diligence and perseverance in pursuing this controversial investigation,” says Forward Editor Jane Eisner.
The winners will be announced at the Annual Awards Dinner on Tuesday, May 19 at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York.
This year, The Deadline Club Awards honors the best in New York area journalism published in 2008. With 29 categories, the Awards include newspapers, radio, television and online materials. Other finalists in The Deadline Club Awards include editors at The Associated Press, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and The New York Post. Winners will be selected from each of the category finalists at the dinner.
ABOUT THE DEADLINE CLUB: The Deadline Club in New York City is one of the largest chapters of the Society of Professional Journalists. Our members include professionals working in broadcast, print, online and journalism education.
The Deadline Club has been serving the cause of New York City journalism for nearly 80 years. The Club sponsors one of the city’s most prestigious journalism awards programs; its coveted “Rubes,” distinctive statuettes designed by the late Rube Goldberg, are awarded at a dinner each spring. At that dinner, scholarships are awarded to some of the city’s most outstanding journalism students. The scholarships are funded through The Deadline Club Foundation. The Club also maintains the New York Journalism Hall of Fame and elects and inducts its members.
