Peachpit Press and UC Berkeley Extension Announce New Editing Scholarship for 2009
Wednesday 07. January 2009 - Application deadline is January 30, 2009
Peachpit Press and UC Berkeley Extension are pleased to offer the first annual Marjorie Baer Scholarship for Editorial Excellence. The scholarship covers the full cost of UC Berkeley Extension’s highly respected Professional Sequence in Editing program. The first two scholarships will be awarded in March 2009.
Peachpit Press established the scholarship last year in the name of Marjorie Baer, a long time executive editor at the publishing house who was known for her skills in training authors and editors.
“As senior executive editor at Peachpit, Marjorie Baer influenced all areas of our publishing plans, including acquisitions strategy and editorial development across all our imprints,” said Nancy Davis, editor in chief of Peachpit Press. “She was most proud of her work training authors and editors on how to craft good books. Marjorie had the uncanny ability to not only get the thirty-thousand foot view of a project but also to get into the weeds and line edit for grammar, style, and sense. We learned so much from her, and we miss her every day.”
The Professional Sequence in Editing is a concentrated four-course program, designed for professional editors who want to add skills, as well as those seeking to make a career change into editorial work. The program includes instruction in grammar, mechanics, and usage, along with copyediting, line editing and developmental editing. Classes for the 2009 spring term begin January 13 and students can study online or in the classroom.
“We’re pleased and honored to join with Peachpit Press to make this scholarship available,” said Liz McDonough, the program’s director, who also worked with Ms. Baer. “Marjorie was a valuable contributor to our editing and publishing courses as a guest speaker and curriculum advisor.”
The editing program at UC Berkeley Extension is highly respected by industry professionals and taught by accomplished professional editors. “Our students find the skills they learn in our editing sequence are applicable to a range of jobs and professions,” said Liz McDonough, the program’s director.
As the continuing education arm of UC Berkeley, one of the finest public research institutions in the United States, UC Berkeley Extension has an unmatched reputation for excellence. Employers and universities recognize that completion of a UC Berkeley Extension professional sequence certifies completion of a high-caliber course of study.
