Unite Meets City Leader Over Liverpool Post and Echo Jobs on Merseyside
Tuesday 28. October 2008 - Unite members at the Liverpool Post and Echo are meeting Councillor Warren Bradley, Leader of Liverpool City Council today (Monday 27th October) to discuss Trinity Mirror's decision to end the printing of its North West local papers in the city.
Over one hundred jobs will go if Trinity Mirror’s plans to move the printing of its North West regional newspapers titles to Oldham go ahead.
Unite is calling for Councillor Warren Bradley to get behind their fight to save the Liverpool print site and enter into top level discussions with Trinity Mirror in a bid to save these local jobs in Liverpool.
Unite Regional Officer, Paul Finegan said: “We are extremely angry about what is happening because the fact of the matter is Trinity Mirror is making enormous profit out of Merseyside. The company has a responsibility to its readers and to this community of loyal readers to ensure that Merseyside news is printed on Merseyside.
“The people of Merseyside are backing the campaign but we now need the Leader of Liverpool City Council to step in to make Trinity Mirror listen. Everything must be done to ensure Trinity Mirror abandons it plans and thinks again about investing in new equipment in Liverpool. Stop this closure and keep these regional titles and jobs in our city.”
Since the announcement in September workers at Liverpool Daily Post and Echo have been campaigning to halt the company’s proposals to shift the print site to its site in Oldham. Unite says workers are not only fighting to save 101 local jobs but to help secure future quality jobs and skills on Merseyside.
Unite is calling an emergency meeting with local MPs at Westminster.
