Unite Urge Local People to Back Campaign to Keep the
Monday 22. September 2008 - Unite, the UK's largest Union, will be calling on people across Merseyside to join their campaign to keep the Liverpool Daily Post and Echo printed in Liverpool.
Unite members at the Liverpool Echo and Daily Post are fighting to save their jobs after Trinity Mirror announced plans to shift the printing of its North West regional newspaper titles to Oldham, Manchester ending over 150 years of newspaper printing in the city.
Workers from the Liverpool site will be visiting Liverpool town centre on Saturday 20th September to encourage the public to sign their petition. The petition calls on the support from the local community, government and local MPs to sign up to the campaign to keep the Liverpool Daily Post and Echo printed in Liverpool and stop Trinity Mirror’s planned closure.
The Liverpool site employs 100 skilled workers who print local newspapers including Liverpool Echo and Daily Post.
Unite Regional Officer, Paul Finegan said: “Too many highly skilled jobs have already been lost on Merseyside and we will not stand by and let Trinity Mirror move the printing of its local newspapers out of this city without a fight.
“Liverpool is a city with enormous pride and over 150 years of printing production history. A city celebrating its achievement of Capital of Culture and a bright future ahead that deserves to have its own print and distribution operation at the heart of its readership. Its time the company listens to its readers’ concerns and re-directs its investment in Liverpool to protect the future of the workforce.
“We are asking the local people to support the workers at the threatened Old Hall Street site and the campaign to keep Liverpool Daily Post and Echo printed on Merseyside.
“We urge Trinity Mirror to have meaningful talks with Unite so we can examine every possibility to retain production on Merseyside.”
