Sun Media Launches e-editions for 32 Newspapers Markets
Monday 22. September 2008 - Sun Media is launching online e-editions of 32 newspapers Monday, offering readers an electronic image of the newspapers exactly as they appear on paper and giving advertisers the possibility of direct connections to consumers.
“Readers can stay connected with their local Sun Media newspaper no matter where they are,” said Steve Angelevski, Corporate Vice-President, Reader Sales and Service at Sun Media. “For advertisers, the interactive e-edition allows readers to connect with them through website links, e-mail addresses and phone numbers, as they browse the e-edition.”
Subscribers can either view the full e-edition on a computer – the actual page layouts with stories, photos and advertisements – or see a version optimized for mobile devices such as a BlackBerry or iPhone, plus readers can receive daily e-mail notifications of news.
“This will be a great service for readers when they are travelling, spending time at a cottage or are otherwise unable to get the print edition and the new, real-time dimension for advertisers will be an additional convenient way to connect with consumers,” said Mr. Angelevski.
Readers can download titles for offline viewing, listen to publications on their computers or mobile phones, share articles through e-mail or their blogs, post stories on social networks, comment on articles and view picture galleries. There is also a powerful search and monitoring feature that allows readers to be alerted when stories match their search criteria.
The service delivers e-editions of all the Sun dailies in major urban markets plus other daily and non-daily publications. For a free 14-day trial of the subscription service, connect to e-edition via the newspaper’s website. After the free trial, the e-edition will be offered at a nominal fee to existing subscribers; the 24 hours free dailies will be accessible at no cost.
The Sun Media e-edition was developed in cooperation with NewspaperDirect, a Vancouver-based company that works with 750 newspaper and magazine publishers from 80 countries around the globe to market and sell hardcopy and digital editions their publications worldwide.
“We are excited to be working with Canada’s largest national chain of daily and community newspapers,” said Alex Kroogman, CEO of NewspaperDirect. “With their new e-editions, not only will Sun Media be able to help connect and build better communities, it can further expand its Newspapers in Education (NIE) programs and enhance its support of educators who value newspapers as a critical tool for teaching students to read, analyze information and develop essential learning skills.”
