Heidelberg Receives Forest Stewardship Council Seal of Approval

As the world’s premier printing press manufacturer, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) has obtained certification to the internationally recognized Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) standard for its Print Media Centers at the Heidelberg and Wiesloch-Walldorf sites. FSC is a global certification system that stands for sustainable forestry. Wood and paper with the FSC seal of approval is guaranteed not to come from overexploited forests. The FSC promotes socially responsible and environmentally friendly forestry. FSC certified products guarantee this sustainability from the processing stage to the end consumer.
The Print Media Center (PMC) is the customer demonstration center where Heidelberg showcases its solution portfolio covering prepress, press, and postpress. End products such as sample jobs for customers, company magazines, annual reports, internal documents and product information are produced at the Heidelberg site. 150 employees process approximately 800 tons of paper per year. A new PMC has been opened in Wiesloch-Walldorf focusing on the folding carton and packaging industry.
By using FSC papers and supporting the global FSC system, Heidelberg is placing further emphasis on the environmentally friendly and socially responsible focus of its corporate strategy.

The fourth FSC Global Paper Forum, supported by Heidelberg, is to take place in the CCD South Congress Center at drupa in Dusseldorf on June 9 and 10, 2008. The forum will act as a meeting place for FSC-certified companies, paper buyers, pulp suppliers and representatives from environmental and social groups. The aim is to create a larger market for FSC paper and identify further marketing opportunities. The two-day program is divided into talks, panel discussions, workshops and information on subjects such as FSC regulations, FSC in packaging, and the new FSC COC standard. Eike Frühbrodt, Vice President Product Management, will hold a talk on the opportunities offered by ecological printing.

DetailsPassing on know-how to customers
Heidelberg supports its customers with state-of-the-art technology and know-how and by ensuring highly efficient and environmentally friendly manufacture of print products. Environmental issues have been an integral part of Heidelberg company policy since as early as 1992. The company aims to ensure the most efficient use of the resources required in the print process such as energy, water, solvents, ink, and paper.
In Halls 1 and 2 at drupa, Heidelberg will be running HEI ECO tours that highlight examples of innovation and sustainability in the print process. The guided HEI ECO tour will take place twice a day – at 11.15 a.m. in German and 2.15 p.m. in English. Those interested in joining the tour can register at any information point in the two halls or, in the run up to drupa, on the Internet at www.drupa-heidelberg.com.
At drupa itself, Heidelberg will be producing over 80 different jobs in conjunction with branded goods manufacturer adidas. Naturally, the vast majority of these will be printed on FSC-certified paper.
Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)
The FSC was founded in 1993 in Toronto, Canada. The aim of this international, non-profit-making organization is to implement the requirements for sustainable forest development passed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1992. The FSC is supported by WWF, Greenpeace, Nabu, Robin Wood, social groups and businesses. The key certification criteria include reforestation and socially responsible use. Since 1993, over 90 million hectares of forest in 78 countries worldwide have been FSC certified – that’s around 2.4 percent of all the world’s forests.
