We do it the sustainable way

Monday 28. April 2008 - Reduce, re-use, re-think and recycle. These four focus points play a big part of Superfos' steps towards a smaller carbon footprint. You can experience the green results at Interpack 2008

The focus on carbon footprint is rising among politicians, consumers and global retailers resulting in a growing demand for sustainable solutions. As a leading packaging manufacturer, Superfos takes on a natural part of this aim to reach a smaller carbon footprint through new innovations and optimised manufacturing processes.

“Though packaging accounts for only 10% of a product’s total CO2 emission, it is our ambition to contribute in reaching the European Commission’s goal of a 20% reduction in greenhouse gases before 2020. Therefore, the 4 Rs reduce, re-use, re-think & recycle are integrated in our everyday work and we are working on our own sustainability strategy that will involve all parts of the Superfos Group,” says Regional Director Søren Rohleder.

Steps to a smaller footprint
Several years of product innovation have already resulted in weight reduction, optimised pallets and savings on raw material and energy consumption. This focus on sustainable solutions has led to a break-through in green packaging and massive reductions of the carbon footprint.

“Our CO2 footprint calculations show that we have already reduced our CO2 emission through weight reductions, use of post consume raw materials and a strong focus on energy reduction throughout the manufacturing process. However, the real break-through is the possibility of recycling the packaging material which is estimated to reduce the CO2 footprint by 74%,” Søren Rohleder explains and adds:

“A packaging product that really saves CO2 is our new Eco packaging line made of 100% recycled and recyclable materials. Naturally, this concept plays a central role of our spectacular set-up of sustainable packaging solution at our stand at Interpack 2008. And I invite all of you to come and visit our stand and be inspired.”

What affects the carbon footprint?

Superfos’ CO2 footprint calculations shows that the CO2 emissions are reduced by

• 74% through recycling of the packaging material
• 22% through a 25% weight reduction
• 20% through the use of post consume raw materials
• 15% through energy reduction throughout the manufacturing process
