Mohawk Industries Celebrates Earth Day … Every Day

As people around the globe “go green” this Earth Day, Mohawk Industries, the world’s leading floor covering company, continues its daily commitment to environmental leadership that works. Mohawk focuses on environmentally smart business practices that benefit the consumer, the environment and the bottom line. To celebrate Earth Day, Mohawk recognizes its many environmentally smart products and initiatives.
“At Mohawk, we focus on environmental issues every day,” said Frank Endrenyi, vice president of sustainable development at Mohawk Industries. “We continue to find ways to produce eco-smart products, decrease our waste stream and make our manufacturing facilities more energy efficient. It is our responsibility to do our best to help the environment and offer consumers top- of-the line flooring products.”
One example of Mohawk’s many environmentally smart products is its EverStrand(TM) carpet. Each year almost 3 billion recycled PET plastic bottles are used to manufacture this 100 percent recycled content carpet fiber. Mohawk also makes use of the bottle caps and labels to produce plastic carpet cores that can be used over and over again instead of cardboard cores. This alone helps save 68,000 trees each year. Since 1999, Mohawk has used more than 17 billion plastic bottles to manufacture this carpet.
Mohawk’s environmentally smart thinking doesn’t stop with recycled plastic bottles.
— Mohawk diverts 1.75 billion pounds of pre- and post-consumer waste from
landfills each year.
— All of Mohawk residential carpets contribute at least one point to
LEED-certified buildings.
— Mohawk SmartStrand(R) with DuPont(TM) Sorona(R) renewably sourced
polymer is made in part from renewable resources.
— Mohawk laminate U.S. core boards, made by reusing post-industrial waste
created by the lumber industry, keep more than 360,000 tons of waste
out of landfills each year.
— Mohawk offers more than 30 Forest Stewardship Council-certified wood
flooring options.
— The Mohawk Greenworks Center uses patent pending technology to process
100 percent of the carpet — fiber, backing, and latex — and recover
90 percent of all materials for reuse.
Mohawk’s green efforts are being promoted under the “Mohawk Greenworks” umbrella.
