CeBIT 2008 presents a broad spectrum of Auto ID/RFID-technologies

Monday 11. February 2008 - Auto ID/RFID solutions for everyday business use - an overview

Forum program with live demonstrations
In order to optimize business processes, it is often necessary to identify objects and track their location throughout the process chain. To do this quickly, reliably and above all contactlessly, businesses now use radio frequency identification technology, or RFID for short. Simple applications are already in use in many areas of our daily lives – typically in controlled access systems such as the ticketing arrangements for the 2006 Football World Cup, in ski passes or car keys. A much greater potential exists for the use of RFID to identify and track components and individual products. RFID systems can bring significant competitive advantages for businesses in manufacturing, commerce and logistics. At CeBIT 2008, which runs from 4 to 9 March, visitors can learn all about the latest international developments in Auto ID/RFID in Hall 7. On a display area in excess of 5,000 square metres, leading systems suppliers such as deister electronic, Feig Electronic, Identec Solutions, Psion Teklogix and Siemens A&D (Automation and Drives) will be presenting their various solutions.

A major attraction in Hall 7 will be the “Auto ID/RFID Solutions Park”, organized by Deutsche Messe in collaboration with AIM Deutschland (Industry Association for Automatic Identification, Data Capture and Mobile Data Communication). Drawing on concrete examples and practical scenarios, the benefits of Auto ID/RFID applications for business processes will be graphically demonstrated. Siemens, for example, has developed an RFID scanner that allows baggage to be identified at airports more quickly and reliably. This exhibit can be seen in the “Aviation” section at CeBIT. Another highlight of the “Auto ID/RFID Solutions Park” is the “Tracking & Tracing Theatre”, which had its successful premiere at CeBIT 2007. Typical Auto ID/RFID technologies will be showcased here within the context of the overall supply chain – from manufacturer to wholesaler to consumer. Based on the example of a pharmacy, the monitoring and sale of drugs and proprietary products using Auto ID processes will be demonstrated. The “Auto ID/RFID Solutions Park” is sponsored by user enterprises such as the Metro Group, Procter & Gamble, the Rewe Group and logistics specialist Kuehne+Nagel.

The “CeBIT Auto ID/RFID Forum”, staged in association with the trade journal RFID im Blick, is centrally located within the “Auto ID/RFID Solutions Park”. On the opening day of CeBIT (4 March), industry practitioners will engage in a panel discussion to consider what kind of scenarios based on Auto ID/RFID technologies are likely for the consumer goods industry in the future, and how far such applications can enhance brand protection. From the Wednesday to the Saturday of the show (5 to 8 March) the daily Forum program will get under way with the “Psion Teklogix Mobile Show”. Here the audience can see how different Auto ID/RFID technologies work together in a real-life industrial environment, in real time, live on the platform. Various logistical challenges facing manufacturing industry, the aviation industry and commerce will then be discussed in a series of themed debates. Other topics on the Forum agenda include “RFID in Europe”, “Security and identification”, “Innovative applications for Auto ID/RFID”, “Auto ID/RFID in the healthcare sector” and “The role of Auto ID/RFID in Near Field Communication (NFC)” for cashless payments or electronic access control. As well as Electrobit and Feig Electronic, other big names contributing presentations of their own to the “CeBIT Auto ID/RFID Forum” are the Metro Group and Siemens
