Akita Epson to Triple Inkjet Printhead Production Capacity with New Factory

Akita Epson Corporation, a group company of Seiko Epson Corporation (TSE: 6724, “Epson”), will invest a total of approximately 3.4 billion yen on the construction of a new factory to increase production capacity of printheads for inkjet printers. Construction will begin in November 2015. The new factory, which will begin operations in the autumn of 2016, will triple Akita Epson’s current printhead production capacity.

FTC Bans “Biodegradable” On Products

In a decision that reverses its Administrative Law Judge and sets new national environmental policy, a Federal Trade Commission decision released on October 19, 2015 forbids the term “Biodegradable” from appearing on any product unless that product is shown to completely break down into elements in nature within five years after customary disposal. See In re ECM Biofilms, FTC Docket No. 9358 (Oct. 19, 2015). Under that standard, bananas, oranges, wood, and even paper (all understood by scientists to be intrinsically biodegradable) are not “fully biodegradable” because none reliably biodegrades into elements within five years after disposal.

Resolute Responds to U.S. Department of Commerce Countervailing Duties Investigation

Resolute Forest Products Inc. (NYSE: RFP) (TSX: RFP) today announced that it is disappointed with the decision by the U.S. Department of Commerce to impose countervailing duties against Resolute in connection with its investigation of imports of supercalendered paper from Canada. Commerce determined a subsidy rate of 17.87% for Resolute, and rates of 20.18% for Port Hawkesbury Paper LP and 18.85% for all other producers/exporters in Canada. On July 29, 2015, Commerce calculated a preliminary rate of 2.04% for Resolute. Resolute believes that Commerce’s justification for Resolute’s significant increase is based on a failure to consider all the relevant factors and an incorrect application of the statute.
