International Paper (NYSE: IP) today reported preliminary 2009 first-quarter net earnings of $257 million ($0.61 per share) compared with a loss of $1.79 billion ($4.25 per share) in the fourth quarter of 2008 and earnings of $133 million ($0.31 per share) in the first quarter of 2008. Amounts in all periods include special items, including $330 million ($0.78 per share) in the first quarter of 2009 for alternative fuel mixture credits, and a $1.8 billion goodwill impairment charge ($4.22 per share) in the 2008 fourth quarter.
