Projects at touchpoint packaging combine design, embellishment, sustainability, safety

Saturday 08. June 2024 - The Magical Shapes boxes on display at the stand were finished inline on a Speedmaster XL 106v printing machine from HEIDELBERG with KURZ KPS slim 2.0 (patent pending), which is produced on a 50 % thinner carrier (6 m instead of 12 m).

drupa 2024, the world’s leading trade fair for the print and packaging industry, will once again open its doors in Düsseldorf to showcase the latest innovations and advances. From May 28 to June 7, 2024, the renowned event will bring together industry leaders, experts and visionaries to provide insights into the future of print technology and showcase groundbreaking solutions.
A special highlight of drupa 2024 is touchpoint packaging (tpp). This specially curated forum offers a unique platform dedicated to trends and technologies in packaging printing. Visitors can look forward to inspiring talks, live demonstrations and interactive workshops designed to push creative and technological boundaries. The tpp serves as a central meeting point for anyone interested in innovative packaging solutions and their impact on the environment and society. LEONHARD KURZ, Platinum Partner of drupa and official partner of touchpoint packaging, will be focusing on some of the core topics ‘Neo-Ecology’, ‘Consumers’ mind’, ‘Connectivity’, ‘Glocalization’ and ‘Future Regulations’ at the touchpoint packaging, stand B31 in Hall 3. KURZ will be presenting itself with various partner projects, innovative design ideas and exciting talks.
Neo-Ecology: Responsible and sustainable packaging
KURZ is presenting a project with Heidelberger Druckmaschinen on the subject of ‘Neo-Ecology’, in which the cold transfer technology from HEIDELBERG and KURZ is used for the inline finishing of packaging. This resource-saving technology offers ecological and economic benefits by saving material and energy while offering a wide range of design options for packaging. The project also includes a recycling program for the carrier materials used, resulting in sustainable production.
The ‘Magical Shapes’ boxes on display at the stand were finished inline on a Speedmaster XL 106v printing machine from HEIDELBERG with KURZ KPS slim 2.0 (patent pending), which is produced on a 50 % thinner carrier (6 µm instead of 12 µm). During the process, the carrier is removed and, thanks to KURZ RECOSYS, can be processed in KURZ’s own recycling plant so that the valuable raw material rPET can be returned to the cycle. The refined end product is an attractively designed, economically and sustainably produced packaging that attracts consumers at the point of sale. Stéphane Royère, Head of Business Area Packaging & Print at LEONHARD KURZ, and Kerstin Haase, Head of Business Development Packaging at Heidelberger Druckmaschinen, will give a 20-minute presentation on this topic on May 28 at 13:15 (CET), followed by a Q&A. Title of the tpp talk: ‘Design meets Ecology and Economy: Unlocking the Potential of Cold Transfer for Sustainable Packaging Solutions.’
Connectivity: Design, digital finishing and security
As part of the ‘Connectivity’ theme, the Fürth-based finishing expert is presenting a cooperation project with HP Indigo and the KURZ subsidiary SCRIBOS, in which a functionally designed and digitally enhanced honey packaging with security features was developed by the KURZ Design Management Team. With this packaging system, designer Julia König demonstrates that it is not only intended to increase brand sales, but also to save resources and ensure the authenticity of the products through special security features such as the SCRIBOS ValiGate copy-protected QR code. The technology makes it possible to obtain extensive information about product properties, sustainability, ingredients and more by scanning the label with a smartphone, which also appeals to and educates the consumer.
The efficient HP Indigo 6800 / 35K, KURZ DM-JETLINER and DM-MAXLINER 3D printing and digital embellishment machines are used to connect a copyprotected QR code ValiGate with a 2-factor-authentication process, allowing consumers to scan the code and receive feedback on the product’s authenticity. On their mobile phones, users can view the unique and variable distribution of bees on the label. By comparing the position, orientation, and format of the bee displayed on their smartphone to the distribution on the packaging, consumers can verify the authenticity of the product. This interactive approach enhances security through a slot-machine-like process that combines digital print and digital embellishment, security (features), track & trace capabilities and consumer interaction. The DM-MAXLINER 3D opens up a wide range of embellishment options at top speeds in a single pass, and the HP Indigo 6800 / 35K creates variable prints, which KURZ in turn combines with various embellishments.
There will be a 40-minute panel discussion on this topic on May 29 at 12:30 pm (CET) on the tpp stage entitled ‘Sweet & Protected: A smart combination of design and digitally printed brand protection.’ The speakers are Julia König, Senior Designer, Design Management Packaging & Print (KURZ), Anna-Lena Warnecke-Fischer, Project Manager DIGITAL METAL (KURZ), Dr. Steffen Scheibenstock, Head of Digital Business Development (SCRIBOS), and Christian Menegon, Worldwide Business Development Manager Industrial Products & Solutions (HP).
Consumer’s mind: New individualism, health and safety
As part of the theme ‘Consumer’s mind’, KURZ presents the boxes No. 3 project, which serves as a creative tool to illustrate current social, cultural and design trends. The boxes No. 3 project consists of a timeless, versatile and reusable outer shell containing four boxes with radically different designs, which in turn are based on the latest developments in the field of finishing. The award-winning project serves as a creative and inspiring tool to transfer new trends in society and design to packaging. It shows how design can be the starting point for product development and new colors.
More KURZ talks at touchpoint packaging
In addition to the two panel discussions already mentioned, there will be two further talks by KURZ in the tpp area. On May 28 at 4:30 pm (CET), a table talk with Annie Kuschel, Head of Design Management Packaging & Print, entitled ‘View what’s next – Surface Inspiration, colors and trends’ is on the agenda. In addition, Christophe Dujardin, Global Business Development Manager Sustainability & Cold Transfer, will give a 20-minute presentation on May 30 at 11:45 am (CET) on the topic of ‘Redefining embellishment: How attractive embellishment, enhanced recyclability and reduced CO2 footprint go hand in hand.’
