Mondi lands a hat-trick at the Austrian Green Packaging Star Awards

Wednesday 15. September 2021 - The annual Green Packaging Star Awards recognise environmentally friendly packaging and recycling solutions as well as packaging-related improvements to operational processes in production, logistics and distribution.

Mondi, a leading global packaging and paper company, has won three awards for sustainable packaging at the Austrian Green Packaging Star Awards.
The award is presented by Kompack magazine and the Austrian Research Institute for Chemistry and Technology.
The jurors of these awards honoured the high standard of the following three Mondi products:
EcoVantage paper for Tesco carrier bags.
Mondi’s collaboration with the retailer aims to close the loop by involving the entire supply chain. Mondi recycles corrugated packaging waste generated at Tesco and converts it into EcoVantage paper. Together with its network of converters, paper carrier bags are then produced for use by Tesco Central Europe customers. This partnership helps Tesco achieve its net zero emissions target by using recycled and virgin fibres combined to create a recyclable and high performance shopping bag.
WalletPack Recyclable for well-known German sausages.
In collaboration with Bell Germany, Mondi has designed packaging for the meat manufacturer’s “Abraham” range. WalletPack Recyclable is a monomaterial solution that helps prevent food waste and is certified as 93% recyclable by the German institute cyclos-HTP. Thanks to the folded packaging, the meat stays fresh and is easily accessible – and requires 37% less material in production. With its introduction at the beginning of 2021, Bell Germany is expected to save 35 tonnes of plastic waste per year.
Functional barrier paper as a substitute for plastic packaging
Mondi’s barrier-coated functional papers aim to transform packaging for a range of products, including food and toys, where paper was previously unthinkable as a sustainable alternative. The barrier papers are an ideal replacement for plastic laminates and can be used for dry food, frozen food, secondary packaging and flow-pack applications.
They are fully recyclable in most existing waste paper streams, protect against grease and water vapour and can be run on existing form-fill-and-seal (FFS) equipment.
Peter Orisich, CEO Flexible Packaging & Engineered Materials, Mondi, says: “We have decided to take action on climate protection and create circular solutions. With our MAP2030 action plan, we have set out our ambitious sustainability commitments and targets for the next ten years. We are delighted that these products have been awarded the Kompack Green Packaging Star for their sustainability performance.”
