10 years of cooperation: Canon and Climatepartner

Tuesday 14. July 2020 - Canon Europe celebrates its successful ten-year collaboration with ClimatePartner, an international provider of climate protection solutions. This cooperation enables Canon to offer its office and cut sheet customers carbon neutral papers. Last year alone, Canon Europe offset almost 6 million kilograms of CO2.

As part of its global responsibility to provide the highest quality products and to run the company in an environmentally friendly and socially responsible way, Canon, in cooperation with ClimatePartner, helps customers reduce greenhouse gases and make a significant contribution to the fight against global warming. Since the beginning of the cooperation, around 34 million kilograms of CO2 have been offset by Canon’s climate-neutral paper.
Thanks to the partnership, Canon Europe Imaging Supplies, Canon’s business unit that provides print media and other consumables for all applications, can offer its customers climate-neutral products for office and cut-sheet printer paper. Carbon offsets are achieved through carbon reduction or avoidance measures and by offsetting remaining emissions. The following paper products are carbon neutral and cover a wide range of printing applications:
Black Label Zero – for daily use
Top Colour Zero – for high quality prints
Recycled White Zero – for environmentally conscious customers who want both recycled paper and CO2 compensation in one
Orange Label Zero – Introduced in 2018, this is the neutral choice for selected Canon dealers and their customers
Carbon emissions from the entire life cycle of these media, from forest to paper mill to delivery, are fully offset through a combination of efficient use of resources in the paper mill, through the replacement of fossil fuels and with the support of a certified carbon offset project. This concept is complemented by measures such as the supply of reusable or recycled materials to minimize the need for new resources.
Canon’s climate-conscious customers can make a demonstrable and measurable contribution to climate protection by purchasing products marked with the ClimatePartner label. This ensures actual climate neutrality and certified carbon offsetting. The label can be found on all Canon zero paper products. The individual ID provided in the label gives customers access to current calculations of the product’s CO2 emissions as well as details of the certified carbon offset projects that are supported by offsetting unavoidable emissions.
Canon’s support also helps to promote sustainable development in the project countries, for example by improving drinking water supplies, developing local infrastructure, creating jobs and protecting biodiversity. Among the many projects Canon supports, the protection of forests in Para, Brazil, has so far offset almost 24 million kilograms of CO2 emissions. The project protects 90,000 hectares of forest and prohibits commercial clearing. This helps to create alternative sources of income for the 94 local families.
Maurice Pardoel, Director Product Line Management, Canon Europe Imaging Supplies, explains the advantages of such a successful, long-term partnership: “ClimatePartner is one of the pioneers and, as an international market leader, supports companies in climate protection. Through this partnership we can offer our customers a certified solution to minimize their carbon footprint while supporting valuable development projects. The use of the label and ID code on the packaging of our zero-paper products is a visible reminder of our carbon offset. And it is this transparency – one of the foundations of our partnership – that is very important to Canon as it enables us to show our customers our commitment to sustainability.”
Canon introduced its first carbon neutral office papers to Austrian customers in 2010. Even then, the aim was to expand Canon’s climate protection and sustainability activities as part of its overall climate strategy, in addition to Canon’s responsible forestry initiatives, and to complement its sustainable digital printing systems product portfolio.

Pardoel says: “At Canon we work according to the philosophy of Kyosei, a Japanese word meaning ‘living and working together for the common good’. The common good is defined by UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which provide Canon with a framework for managing social and environmental impacts. Climate neutrality has been a key part of our sustainability strategy for over a decade. As we look to the future and develop more sustainable practices, carbon neutrality will continue to play a key role in our business strategy”.
Moritz Lehmkuhl, founder and CEO of ClimatePartner, added: “We are very pleased to celebrate this longstanding partnership with Canon. We also look forward to continuing to be the best possible partner in climate protection and to providing Canon and its customers with our support, advice and expertise. Our ten years of cooperation shows that climate protection remains a top priority for Canon’s business. We will work together to continue this success and thereby positively impact both the environment and the climate”.
