Highest efficiency in adhesive application also stands for greater sustainability in packaging production

Friday 16. August 2019 - At Baumer hhs at FachPack 2019 (24 - 26 September in Nuremberg Germany) in Hall 2 (Stand 2-411), everything revolves around maximum efficiency in adhesive application in the production of folding boxes and corrugated board packaging. The company will highlight the various facets of this demanding topic - maximum efficiency in adhesive application not only stands for higher productivity and profitability, but also for greater sustainability.

“The reliability and high precision of our technology enable our customers to significantly reduce their use of adhesives and their rejects. This benefits the life cycle assessments of their companies and their products. As a pioneer in contactless adhesive application, Baumer hhs is the preferred partner for many packaging and machine manufacturers in the industry when it comes to adhesive application. We underline this with our own exhibition stand in Nuremberg”, says Baumer hhs sales manager Markus Leier. With the new GlueCalc app for smartphones, the dot board amplifier card for the electric tesla hotmelt valves and Xfeed for the central supply of hotmelt systems with adhesive granulate, the company is presenting three innovative solutions at FachPack that meet both the economic and ecological goals of packaging production.
A key to reduced adhesive consumption is the conversion of adhesive application from adhesive beads to adhesive dots. In many packaging applications, the adhesive application can be reduced by 50 % and more without having to compromise on the quality and safety of the bondings. Depending on the production volume, Baumer hhs customers achieve cost savings ranging from a few thousand euros to several tens of thousands of euros per year. Added to this are lower CO2 emissions, which go hand in hand with reduced adhesive consumption.
With this in mind, the Baumer hhs dot board amplifier card supports the conversion of adhesive application from adhesive beads to adhesive dots in hotmelt applications. dot board converts the input signals for the tesla hotmelt valves into high-frequency signals, which then apply several adhesive dots instead of adhesive beads. The quality of even the smallest adhesive dots is reliably monitored with the powerful Baumer hhs sensor technology, which effortlessly keeps up even at the highest machine speeds.
With the innovative GlueCalc app for smartphones, Baumer hhs customers can quickly, conveniently, and scientifically determine the extent to which switching from adhesive beads to adhesive dots reduces adhesive consumption and thus CO2 emissions. All they need to do is enter a few production data such as the number of adhesive beads per product, their lengths and widths before pressing, the number of products to be produced per minute, the adhesive types and their prices per kg. The app then calculates the costs and CO2 emissions for different variants of the adhesive application and presents the results in the form of clear tables and graphs. For example, data on reduced CO2 emissions can be sent directly from the app to customers by e-mail to document the greater sustainability of their packaging. GlueCalc has recently been made available for download in the App Store.
Xfeed automatically supplies up to 20 hotmelt gluers with adhesive granulate from a central storage location, as required. The system bridges uniquely large distances of up to 200 meters at high conveying capacities. In addition to the ease of operation and the significantly higher work safety for machine operators, no glue can be spilled or soiled during the transport of the pellets to the hotmelt gluers with the closed system. In addition to clean working environments, perfect adhesive quality is always guaranteed. Xfeed automatically provides statistical data on the adhesive supply to each connected system. This data can be analyzed and used for the modification of glue patterns. This also enables Baumer hhs customers to reduce their adhesive consumption and thus their CO2 emissions.
These are all innovations from Baumer hhs that meet the industry 4.0 concept, which strives for digitized and networked production processes with the goal of higher efficiency and sustainability.
