QuarkXPress 2018 chooses callas pdfToolbox technology for its new PDF engine

Thursday 19. April 2018 - The next version of QuarkXPress 2018, due for release in mid-May, offers users a range of new features, including a deeper selection of options for professional print publishing. These include additional processing for color fonts, higher compression rates and the ability to create PDF files which comply with both the PDFA and PDFX standards. This is made possible thanks to the complete integration of pdfToolbox from callas software GmbH. Acting as a software development kit (SDK), pdfToolbox fits seamlessly into existing solutions.

“We have been an OEM partner of callas for twelve years”, said Matthias Gilke, Senior Global Marketing Manager at Quark Europe Ltd., “and we are very excited on behalf of our users to now be integrating the full power of the pdfToolbox technology into QuarkXPress 2018. It will mean higher-quality outputs for PDF, PDF/X and PDF/A files, as well as an expanded range of options for future versions of the software.”

Users of QuarkXPress 2018 can also use the pdfToolbox technology to create a single PDF file which complies with both PDF/X-4 and PDF/A-2. PDF/A is the ISO standard for long-term archiving, while PDF/X-4 is the ISO standard for exchanging printable PDF files. Users of QuarkXPress 2018 can also ‘tag’ the PDF files they create, providing internal information on the structure of the file’s content and the correct reading order. This latter feature is a prerequisite for accessible PDF files, meaning that users now only need to create and retain a single PDF file to fulfill printing, accessibility and long-term archiving requirements. This considerably simplifies PDF-based workflows!
“We are naturally very proud to bring the full functionality of our pdfToolbox to users of QuarkXPress 2018”, said Dietrich von Seggern, Managing Director at callas software GmbH. “In previous versions of QuarkXPress, pdfToolbox had verified PDF/X files. With this new release, our software now takes over full responsibility for creating printable PDF files. Since we have also licensed pdfToolbox to Adobe, PDF/X-4 files created here are certified using the same technology as in Adobe Acrobat.”
