Sappi at Interpack

Tuesday 21. March 2017 - As one of the worlds leading suppliers of packaging substrates, Sappi Packaging and Speciality Papers will be presenting its innovative sustainable packaging solutions made from renewable raw materials at Interpack 2017 in Düsseldorf.

For this global supplier of speciality papers and boards, the world’s largest packaging trade fair is the ideal forum for exchanging ideas with international packaging experts. The Sappi stand (D19 in Hall 9) will showcase efficient ways and possibilities to take advantage of packaging trends to meet the growing demands to deliver the packaging of the future. Featured will be solutions and information for brand owners, packaging companies, converters, printers and print finishers, designers and advertising agencies. Of particular interest in the Sappi stand will be the world’s only packaging papers with integrated barrier and heat-sealing properties, a truly innovative approach to packaging. In addition, the company will be presenting innovations and packaging solutions for containerboard, rigid packaging, label papers and flexible packaging.
Functional Papers: now with an expanded range
Four years ago, Sappi was the world’s first manufacturer to present an innovative speciality paper with a mineral oil barrier and heat sealing properties integrated directly into the paper. Since then, the Sappi Guard product range has been continuously expanded with additional high-barrier paper-based solutions. As part of Interpack 2017, Sappi will be presenting more new developments in the field of multifunctional barrier papers for food and non-food packaging.

Innovations on show will include initial results from the recently announced collaboration agreement between Sappi and Felix Schoeller. Both companies have unique competencies in their respective business segments and together are focusing on highlighting sustainable and high-quality alternatives to current packaging solutions with their future products. They really have their finger on the pulse with this approach. The World Economic Forum in Davos recently provided a highly relevant point of reference here. Just prior to the event, 40 of the world’s largest corporations committed to using less plastic.
At Interpack 2017, the Sappi Guard product range will also be featured in the international WorldStar Packaging Awards 2017 in the food industry sector of the World Packaging Organisation. Just last year, multifunctional barrier papers from Sappi received the German Packaging Award 2016 in the “New Materials” category. The jury praised Sappi’s sustainable paper packaging solutions, which offer innovative integrated barrier and heat seal characteristics otherwise only achievable with multi-layer films. Papers in the Sappi Guard product family also have exceptional tactile properties and excellent printability, the jury noted.
Containerboard: Benefits of virgin fibre liners
The Fusion virgin fibre liner from Sappi was the pioneer in the field of white coated topliners for corrugated board. Thanks to the use of bleached virgin fibres as the raw material, these topliners also offer visual benefits as well as considerable strength advantages. They achieve approximately the same material strength as test liners, with a lower weight per unit surface area. When the total cost of ownership (TCO) is considered, as companies are increasingly doing, the virgin fibre liners represent a real alternative to the double-coated test liners that are most commonly used. The use of the Fusion top liner provides corrugated board with a significant upgrade as a raw material for high quality consumer goods and shelf-ready packaging since it enables consistently high quality levels. And this will drive greater demand. To meet that demand, Sappi has expanded production to a second production site in Ehingen. This ensures rapid and reliable supply to all customers. At Interpack, Sappi will also be presenting new paper weights for its Fusion Topliner.
Rigid Packaging: Ultimate brand differentiation with Algro Design
Sappi will also be presenting its multi-award-winning bright white solid bleached board, Algro Design, displayed in a variety of applications. This board is generally used for demanding folding box applications, especially for cosmetics, perfumes, beauty and healthcare, fine chocolate and confectionery packaging, as well as fashion and lifestyle items, luxury drinks and for outstanding graphic applications. The highly-white, silky-coated cellulose carton board in the Algro Design product range provides the ideal basis for uniform, visually and physically appealing, high quality brand communications.
In the premium packaging segment, solid bleached board grades must exhibit distinctive and relevant features that symbolise brand values and provide the end-user with a unique experience. These include the excellent whiteness and the unique surface quality of Algro Design with its outstanding finishing properties. These characteristics give Algro Design its unique look and distinctive brand appearance. Sappi has expanded production of Algro Design and Algro Design Duo to its Maastricht mill. This means the company has the unique opportunity in the marketplace of producing this high quality carton at two locations with the ability to respond even more quickly to customer requirements.
Label Papers: new facestock grade
With its Parade product line, Sappi offers a comprehensive range of facestock and wet glue label papers for a variety of processing options. At Interpack, Sappi will be launching a new facestock label paper in the form of Parade FS, which is suitable for use in self-adhesive label applications such as stickers and price tags. Parade FS can be printed with offset, flexographic and gravure and laminated. Thanks to its excellent surface properties, the glossy paper, coated on one side, ensures a brilliant appearance and excellent print results.
Flexible Packaging: Large range for specific applications
Sappi offers a comprehensive range of coated and uncoated papers for food and non-food applications in the field of flexible packaging. These include speciality papers for sachets, bags and wrappers. Sappi papers impress with their outstanding processing properties. The speciality papers that are coated on one side are ideal for outer packaging of products requiring high-quality printing. Uncoated varieties lend themselves to inner packaging, foil lamination and pouches. The versatile Sappi product portfolio offers brand owners and converters the best packaging solution for each individual requirement.
Consulting and investment for the future
Also at Interpack, experienced packaging specialists from Sappi will be discussing potential packaging concepts with visitors attending from around the world. “We are the expert and reliable partner when it comes to challenging packaging solutions as well as the manufacturing and processing processes for these types of packaging,” confirms Thomas Kratochwill, Vice President Sales & Marketing at Sappi Packaging and Speciality Papers. “In light of the high investment levels and significant amount of work that Sappi has put into packaging and speciality papers, we will be offering even more surprises to visitors at our Interpack stand. For this reason, we are delighted to invite all visitors to stop by the Sappi booth to discuss their specific requirements with us.” Sappi has set itself the goal of launching at least two innovative products into the market each year. The results for the year 2017 will be on show at Interpack 2017.
