Plantable Wrapping Paper to Eliminate Christmas Waste
Monday 02. December 2013 - Half of the fun of Christmas is ripping into presents from family and friends or watching someone else do it. We might feel just a twinge or two of guilt as we crumple shreds of once-pristine paper waste into the bin, but what the hell, you're on much-needed Christmas break and you left all of your cares at the office.
The problem is that in the UK last year, we racked up 227,000 miles of wasted paper after Christmas. That’s enough paper to wrap the world nine times.
Instead of throwing wrapping paper in the bin this Christmas, the UK-based Innovation Agency, BEAF have come up with Eden’s Paper.
Eden’s Paper is a plantable wrapping paper, so now, instead of throwing the paper in the bin, you can plant it to grow vegetables, fruits and herbs and flowers.
The wrapping paper works by cleverly having seeds embedded into layers of paper. All the layers are held together without glue, which would be a harmful addition to the soil. Even the ink used in the printing process is vegetable-based – so this is an entirely earth-friendly product.
Currently there are five types of wrapping paper to choose from, Chillies, Tomatoes, Broccoli, Onions and Carrots.
