ALISON BROWER NAMED EDITOR-IN-CHIEF OF DR. OZ MAGAZINE
Friday 05. July 2013 - Hearst Magazines President David Carey and Editorial Director Ellen Levine today announced that Alison Brower has been appointed editor-in-chief of the company's new pilot magazine collaboration with Dr. Mehmet Oz, set to debut on newsstands in the first quarter of 2014. Following the successful formula employed to launch Food Network Magazine in 2008 and HGTV Magazine in 2011, Hearst will publish two pilot issues, which could lead to a regular frequency in the second half of 2014. Brower starts in her new role immediately.
The magazine will focus on living life to its fullest, touching on physical and emotional well-being, food, beauty, real-women’s stories, news, travel and finances, all through the lens of Oz’s approachable, inspirational and entertaining persona. The title of the magazine will be announced in the coming weeks.
“Alison is an exceptionally talented and versatile editor, with deep experience developing women’s lifestyle content,” Levine said. “She understands what works across platforms and will work closely with Dr. Oz to bring his advice, spirit and uplifting message to life for readers in print and online.”
“I am honored to have Alison as my partner in developing this project,” Oz said. “She’s spent much of her career speaking to this audience and she knows how to shape and present information in a bold, original way. Plus, she has a positive, big-picture attitude, which is what this magazine is all about.”
Brower was most recently special projects editor at The Hollywood Reporter, managing and editing feature packages themed to industry influence rankings and entertainment events, as well as conceiving and developing related Web and video content. Brower also supervised the weekly rollout of magazine content to the Web and its SEO.
From 2010 to 2012, Brower consulted with media brands on content strategy, editorial for special issues and digital projects, including Hearst Magazines’ Good Housekeeping and Seventeen, Self and Shape. Prior to that, Brower was executive editor of Redbook from 2005 to 2010, planning issues and editing health and lifestyle packages, news features and essays, including a series on infertility that was honored with a Clarion Award. She also oversaw the editing and production of three Redbook-branded books.
Brower was deputy editor of Glamour from 2000 to 2004, editing news, health and emotional features that won accolades including the Amnesty International Media Spotlight Award, the Newswomen’s Club of New York Front Page Award and multiple Clarion Awards. In addition, Brower supervised Glamour’s annual Women of the Year event and editorial package and produced the first Women of the Year television special.
Brower began her magazine career at Cosmopolitan. She is a graduate of Princeton University and is a co-chair of Housing Works Bookstore Café Board of Directors and a member of the Alex Fund board of directors.
