STUNNING SCULPTURES 3D PRINTED IN PAPER

“Journey to the Centre” created by Keith Brown, MIRIAD, on an Mcor Matrix paper 3D printer and finished with boot polish.

Thursday 06. June 2013 - A few months ago, I featured several innovative and elegant sculptures that one of our customers created with an Mcor Matrix paper 3D printer.

Keith Brown, Professor of Sculpture and Digital Technologies/Director of Art and Computing Technologies at the Manchester Institute for Research and Innovation in Art & Design (MIRIAD), Manchester Metropolitan University, used ordinary boot polish following printing to achieve a desired leathery appearance.
A few days ago, Keith sent us several images of a new sculpture he created using his Mcor Matrix and booth polish that I wanted to share with you. This piece is called “Journey to the Centre.”
Keith says, “The Matrix has some splendid attributes and the way the Mcor SliceIT software deals with surface geometry is intriguing and the resolution is excellent.”
I am particularly impressed with the organic, endless form of the piece, combined with the unique texture that he quite simply created with the polish.
Keith explains, “I’ve also been experimenting further with the finish and it really transforms the paper prints into quite sophisticated sculptural objects, rather than seeing them simply as rapid prototypes. The tactile feel of the object is transformed as well as the visual appearance and one would never guess they were made from paper.”
It’s incredibly impressive, and I agree with Keith…the fact that it’s made of ordinary paper just boggles the mind.
