MESSE MÜNCHEN AND NÜRNBERGMESSE TO COOPERATE: DRINKTEC PET SEGMENT AT BRAU BEVIALE AS WELL IN FUTURE
Friday 12. November 2010 - drinktec, the worlds leading fair for beverage and liquid food technology, and Brau Beviale, the European trade fair for beverage raw materials, technologies, logistics and marketing, will cooperate in future in the PET segment. The organizers of the two exhibitions, Messe München GmbH and NürnbergMesse GmbH, have concluded a corresponding agreement under which the PETpoint, the PET segment at drinktec, will also take place at Brau Beviale in Nürnberg in future, starting in November 2011.
The PETpoint presents mainly technologies and accessories for the manufacture and recycling of drink bottles made of PET (polyethylene terephthalate). PLA (polylactide) and other plastics for beverage containers are also represented at the PETpoint. The PETpoint has been an integral part of drinktec, the worlds leading trade fair for beverage and liquid food technology, since 2005 and operates there under its own label. Messe München GmbH acquired the rights to the PETpoint brand from the heidelberg business media GmbH (hbmedia) of Heidelberg on 1 October 2009. At the last drinktec in September 2009, some 120 exhibitors showed their products at the PETpoint on a gross area of 11,000 m², which was 50 per cent more space than in 2005.
Annual cycle
The PETpoint will take place for the first time at Brau Beviale in Nürnberg from 9-11 November 2011, after which an annual cycle is planned. In practice, this means that Nürnberg will host the PETpoint every year except for the drinktec years, in which Brau Beviale does not take place. The next PETpoint at drinktec – which takes place in Munich every four years – will therefore be in 2013.
PETpoint pavilion in Nürnberg
The PETpoint in the Nürnberg exhibition centre in 2011 will occupy a pavilion in hall 2. At least 30 exhibitors are to be obtained initially for the premiere of the PETpoint in Nürnberg. The organization of the PETpoint, especially hall allocation and exhibitor acquisition and support, remains in the hands of the drinktec team at Messe München. The PETpoint 2011 will be marketed as part of visitor promotion for Brau Beviale.
European Beer Star 2013 in Munich
The “European Beer Star”, the noted international beer competition held regularly at Brau Beviale in Nürnberg, is to be presented for the first time at drinktec in Munich in 2013. The competition is organized by the German brewing associations, Verband Private Brauereien Deutschland and Verband Private Brauereien Bayern, in cooperation with the Association of Small and Independent Breweries in Europe (S.I.B.).
“Alliance is good for the Bavarian exhibition sector”
“Brau Beviale and drinktec form an alliance – this is good for the Bavarian exhibition sector and good for the brewing industry,” says Dr. Reinhard Pfeiffer, the CEO responsible at Messe München GmbH: “Both exhibitions complement each other ideally: drinktec every four years as flagship of the beverage and liquid food industry with a global orientation and Brau Beviale as regular get-together for the industry with a focus on Europe. The cooperation enables synergies to be utilized and exploited.”
“Profitable cooperation”
Bernd A. Diederichs, Managing Director of NürnbergMesse: “drinktec and Brau Beviale have an excellent reputation in the beverage and liquid food industry. Both stand for high quality and top organization. Both are at home in Bavaria, but have different emphases regarding visitor promotion. I am sure that the industry and our two exhibitions will benefit from this profitable cooperation.”
Fast innovation cycle
The professional background to the cooperation is the appreciably faster innovation cycle in the PET segment compared with other sectors of the beverage and liquid food industry. Dr. Pfeiffer: “We could not completely meet the needs of the PET industry with the four-year cycle of drinktec. The cooperation with Brau Beviale means we have found an optimum solution and at the same time an outstanding partner in NürnbergMesse.”
PET booming
PET as container material for beverages and liquid food developed into the most important form of packaging in a short space of time. A record number of more than 400,000,000,000 (400 billion!) plastic containers, the majority of PET, were used for filling beverages worldwide in 2009 – this is around one-third of all beverage packaging units. PET containers are thus the preferred form of packaging for bottled drinks worldwide, ahead of glass containers, cans and cartons. In Germany, for example, 77.5 per cent of all non-alcoholic drinks are filled in PET containers. Although research into alternative plastics is in full swing, an end to the PET boom is not foreseeable at present.
Everything for PET
The PETpoint is geared to PET. Preform manufacturers, blow moulding machine producers, suppliers of recycling plants, closure suppliers, container developers and designers, and converters are all represented, in other words, all companies involved in the PET production process.
