The Washington Post Comes to iPad

Monday 08. November 2010 - New App Showcases Conversation Around Washington Post Reporting and Commentary

Curated “Live Topics” Offer Multi-Dimensional Social Experience for Users to Interact on Key Topics of the Day

Today The Washington Post introduced its new App for iPad, now available on the App Store. It combines The Post’s trusted reporting and analysis with innovative social media and sharing capabilities and award-winning multimedia to provide an immersive news experience for iPad users.

Readers can enjoy complimentary full access until mid-February 2011 and experience The Post’s creative new approach to delivering the best in politics, international, arts and culture, economics and area news from the leading news source in the nation’s capital.

“The Washington Post App for iPad is more than just an extension of our paper or website. It’s an innovative, portable experience with our content that enables users to interact in a multi-dimensional way. Users can take full advantage of the experience that the iPad offers through our rich destination pages that provide everything a reader would want around a topic in one comprehensive place,” said Raju Narisetti, Managing Editor, The Washington Post. “We feel we’ve created a uniquely dynamic news experience for users to discuss and share their viewpoints about relevant issues of the day.”

This multi-dimensional approach is captured through the presentation of “Live Topics,” a distinctive component of the Post App. Live Topics offer a single destination for news, commentary, aggregated social media conversations, rich multimedia, photos and user engagement around the top 3-5 issues of the day. They include Washington Post stories, selected headlines from sources across the Web, Facebook comments and Twitter feeds from leading voices that add context to the story. Live Topics are designed to draw users in to share their comments and opinions about key topics of the day that are relevant to them and the world at large.

Chloe Sladden, Twitter Director of Media Partnerships, said: “The effortless way that The Washington Post’s iPad app integrates curated, meaningful Tweets into their articles and content brings Twitter’s real time pulse directly into the app experience. By showing firsthand Tweets from the newsmakers themselves as well as readers’ Twitter reactions, The Post offers a broader, multifaceted perspective on each news story.”

Other features of the app include:

– Comprehensive content including Breaking News, Politics, Business, World News, Opinion, Sports, Lifestyle and Entertainment

– Streamlined, intuitive design and navigation to quickly and easily scan and read the day’s top stories

– Extensive multimedia coverage with video and rich photo galleries from renowned photo journalists around the day’s top news stories

– The ability to comment and share stories via e-mail , Facebook and Twitter

– Saving stories for offline reading

“Mobile is an integral part of The Washington Post’s strategy since we are focused on reaching people anywhere and anytime. We hope users will find that our app for iPad places us among the leaders in mobile innovation,” said Ken Babby, Chief Revenue Officer and General Manager of Digital at The Washington Post.
