Finnish industrial action affects European paper supplies

The Stora Enso mill in Oulu, Finland

Monday 15. March 2010 - Current industrial action by dock workers in Finland is likely to have an impact on the availability of many paper grades next week and beyond. Shortages of Stora Enso grades are anticipated, affecting book manufacturers across Europe.

CPI, working closely with Stora Enso, is taking steps to source alternative grades in order to safeguard its book printing operations in the UK.

The strike began on Thursday 4 March and has closed all Finnish ports, cutting off 90% of Finland’s exports. A backlog of paper orders is currently held up at port warehouses and on rail wagons. Stora Enso, one of Europe’s largest papermakers, continue to manufacture key grades, whilst implementing alternative transport arrangements for its UK customers.

Dockers and port operators are set to resume talks this afternoon with a government mediator after failing to reach agreement yesterday.

CPI representatives will be advising customers on titles which may become affected if this situation fails to improve over the coming days. We would like to thank customers in advance for their cooperation in dealing with this situation.
