RW Coatings – ClearDrip Gloss / Matt Combination Effect System

Friday 12. March 2010 - UK based RW Coatings Ltd a manufacturer of water based coatings and UV curable varnishes, has announced a new combination of coatings and varnishes to enable printers to economically produce fashionable reticulation effects using a standard offset press.

John Russell, Technical Director of RW Coatings Ltd said, ‘several of our customers have asked if we can offer combination effect products at a reasonable price and so we are pleased to announce we are now able to offer these through our network of international dealers.’

There are already a small number of producers who offer similar products which can be run as a single pass on a modern offset-litho press; the RW Coatings products offer similar ‘drip off’ capabilities at a price which will enable printers and designers to offer the feature.
The use of a high gloss coating in combination with a matt varnish has recently become a popular and economic way of providing an eye catching finish to printed work.

However, to produce a gloss / matt finish has in the past required an extra pass through the press with the resultant delay and the possibility of registration problems.

The ClearDrip gloss / matt combination effect system from RW Coatings can achieve this effect by a single pass through the press, avoiding those problems and saving time and money.

The ClearDrip 7050 matt varnish is applied as a ‘spot varnish’ on the final unit of the press without the need for expensive dryers. Using a slightly higher than normal film weight to achieve the best effect.

The coater unit then applies Clearcoat 5060 high gloss or Clearcoat 5080 highest gloss water based coating over the top of the inks and the matt varnish. The resulting gloss / matt combination effect provides an excellent visual contrast on the printed work.

The combination with Clearcoat 5060 gives high gloss, good contrast and attractive reticulation, however the use of Clearcoat 5080 gives probably the highest gloss possible from water based coating, wide contrast with the matt spot areas, and a good reticulation effect. The use of highest quality gloss paper will further improve contrast.
