Day Software: Optimal Content Management Constellation for Boehringer Ingelheim

Friday 19. February 2010 - CQ5 consolidates 26 country web presences, numerous product pages and the intranet onto a single platform

Boehringer Ingelheim, one of Europe’s preeminent researching pharmaceutical enterprises, is consolidating its entire international internal and external web presence onto a single central platform. The central corporate website (www.www.boehringer-ingelheim.com) and Netherlands Internet presence have already been re-engineered on the basis of Day Software’s (www.day.com) CQ5 content management system (CMS). The porting of the remainder of its entire 26 country presences, product pages and intranet to CQ5 is set to follow.
The aim of this re-launch is to standardize the internal and external websites and thereby optimize the company’s business processes. In future, all countries will be able to access a single system and, in this way, be positioned to glean content from the central corporate website at any time. In doing so, elaborate workflows automatically guarantee a uniform look & feel as well as corporate policy compliance by web editors – both in Germany and at all the company’s foreign subsidiaries.

Intuitive and international
Boehringer Ingelheim’s decision for CQ5 was sealed by the software’s intuitive user interface (GUI) which makes website maintenance child’s play – even for users without prior technical knowledge. Moreover, the solution’s internationalism and its ability to be integrated into the legacy IT infrastructure allow CQ5 to be tailored precisely to the unique needs of Boehringer Ingelheim and its numerous international subsidiaries. The pharmaceutical company also placed great emphasis on choosing a “future proof” system which benefits from ongoing R&D investment.

Social collaboration for blogs and commentaries
Besides Day’s leading web content management technology, Boehringer Ingelheim also valued the two additional applications integrated into CQ5: while the Digital Asset Management (DAM) subsystem makes it possible to manage large quantities of rich media – such as videos and audio files – without difficulty, Social Collaboration allows feedback elements such as blogs or commentaries to be integrated easily into the websites. Further plus points for CQ5 were its extensive search functions, the embedding of all relevant applications into a single sign-on domain and the possibility for page visitors to be able to log on for user specific information using e.g. RSS.

Development from the user’s perspective
“A major advantage for us was that CQ5 is extremely flexible and supports easy implementation. This allowed us to realize the project ourselves, despite the complexity of the undertaking,” sums up Manuela Pastore, Director Online Communications at Boehringer Ingelheim. “CQ5’s intuitive user interface also makes it a pleasure for authors to use the system. With CQ5, we’ve invested in a future-proof solution which will also position us to realize many more upcoming concepts.”
A content management system for every website
Despite a range of challenges such as a tight schedule and countless project protagonists from various corporate divisions, Day was able to implement the complex project with its partner, Logica, within just eight months. The porting of the first national web presence (Netherlands) will be followed by five further migrations – including Germany’s – in the first half of 2010. Up to 30 editors are currently working simultaneously in the system. The future number of editors, however, will rise sharply after all the country presences, intranet and product pages have all been migrated to CQ5. Then, the Day solution can become a content management system for every Boehringer Ingelheim web page. Moreover, the integration of further systems – such as SAP – and output to mobile end appliances are also in the planning.
