SUN CHEMICAL SHOWS COMMITMENT TO INNOVATION TO ANSWER CUSTOMER CALLS

Wednesday 30. September 2009 - Sun Chemical is demonstrating its commitment to delivering quality, service and innovation for the narrow web market at this year’s LabelExpo event in Brussels.

“Sun Chemical is at the forefront in developing and bringing to market innovative products and services addressing the need for improved productivity, safety and sustainability in the graphic work flow,” says Jonathan Sexton, Sales Director – Narrow Web, Sun Chemical.

Sun Chemical will showcase a range innovative products and printing solutions that address a number of requirements and challenges facing the industry today:

Smart Colour
EskoArtwork, a global supplier and integrator of innovative solutions for packaging, commercial printing and professional publishing, announced the integration of EskoArtwork software with the Sun Chemical SmartColour database as previously mentioned during drupa 2008.

The solution saves time and money for label and packaging converters by eliminating the need to fingerprint spot color on production presses in order to obtain accurate color results on proof.

The EskoArtwork color management software, included in the Esko Software Suite 7 workflow, downloads full spectral ink profile information directly from the Sun Chemical SmartColour database of ink readings. The SmartColour database gives operators access to +200.000 spectral profiles of real colors printed with real inks on real substrates and regularly up-dated for the purpose of accurate on-screen display and color accurate digital (inkjet and other technology) proofs. There is no longer any need for label converters to allocate resources to spot-colour fingerprinting of production presses, saving significant time and money.

Brand security
Security and brand protection is one of the biggest concerns for businesses today, and the issue has been rising up the business agenda over the last couple of years. The global counterfeit goods market is estimated to be worth nearly $545 billion annually! (Havoscope, 2009)

Sun Chemical has developed a number of ways that manufacturers can use the packaging of a product to protect and develop the brand, such as the new generation of infra red (IR) security inks called SunGuard Apollo that deliver an effective, affordable brand protection solution. It is widely recognised that standard UV fluorescent inks made from UV fluorescing pigments no longer offers real protection as these pigments can easily be brought online. These inks are also easy to detect as the necessary UV lamps are widely available.

Consulting services
In the current economic climate, all businesses are forced to re-evaluate the way in which they operate. Now is the time to start improving business efficiency and make cost savings, none more so than in the print industry.

The Sun Chemical Consulting division is partnering with a number of experts to deliver first class, innovative solutions to all our customers. Examples include:

• Environ for Environment Health & Safety services, including an audit to establish and improve a company’s energy efficiency and resources.
• Radius Solutions for software/hardware systems to improve process control and automate planning

Sun Chemical Consulting is now also offering a range of plastic pallets specially designed for rolls handling, which help to reducing bottleneck, improving logistics and reducing waste of substrate overall.

Sustainability initiatives
Sun Chemical is demonstrating its broad commitment to sustainability in print through involvement in a number of environmentally friendly initiatives such as PrintCity Alliance’s ‘Sustainability, Energy & Environment’ report and a project with Gruner & Jahr (Bertelsmann Group) to audit the carbon footprint of the French weekly news magazine, VSD, from its conception to its place on the shelf.

Sustainable products at LabelExpo
Sustainability is also being built into the latest product concepts being presented at the show including SunClean, a range of environmentally friendly press washes and LED-curing inks, which require lower energy during the curing process.

Sun Chemical also recognises the need to support printers and brand owners sustainability initiatives by providing ink and colour management tools to ensure just enough ink is made for the job, so minimising press returns, and developing products such as SolarScreen Polar Combination White, which meets the challenge for greater flexibility on lower gauge label stocks.

Uwe Boerner, European Sales Manager – Narrow Web, Sun Chemical, said: “As the world’s foremost producer of inks, pigments and colour technology, we continually push the limits of efficiency and strive to adopt the best operational practices and provide the innovative products that create value and remain competitive. We remain 100 per cent committed to making sure that the narrow web market is one of the most innovative, efficient and environmentally friendly in the world. At Sun Chemical, we believe in all our customers and are constantly looking for ways to make them leaders in their industry and improve their efficiency even further.

“LabelExpo is the perfect opportunity to showcase some of these recent products and solutions that will enable both Sun Chemical and its customers to be able to function efficiently and be environmentally friendly both now and in the future.”
