Océ Showcases Applications That Improve Efficiency, Productivity and Profitability Across a Broad Range of Printing Environments

Thursday 10. September 2009 - Print 09 offers unique opportunity to see wide range of Océ solutions that help graphic arts professionals expand services and grow customer base

At Print 09, Océ, an international leader in digital document management and delivery, will present a variety of applications that take advantage of the company’s broad printing capabilities. Demonstrations will show how Océ’s cross-platform consistency, robust printing, workflow automation, finishing capabilities and outstanding support provide fresh opportunities for printing professionals to win customers and capture more revenue from existing accounts. Graphic arts professionals can explore and interact with applications and learn how they can be deployed in their businesses to improve competitiveness and expand their customer base.

“A recent Gartner study found convincing evidence that for the first time, production print professionals overwhelmingly rank digital over offset technology for both value and image quality. At Print 09, Océ again confirms its leadership in this market with a diverse mix of applications, all possible, practical and affordable using today’s digital print technology,” said Mal Baboyian, President, Production Printing Systems division, Océ North America.

Digital Books Showcase Profitable New Business Model
In search of a better business model, the book printing market is transitioning to digital printing to reduce waste, warehousing and transportation costs. With the right technology and systems, books now represent a profitable niche for commercial printers. Océ has achieved significant penetration of the fast-growing digital book manufacturing market, with a presence in leading publishing operations. Print 09 visitors can observe the range of Océ solutions, from black and white and color cutsheet output to very high-speed inkjet. In-booth demonstrations will show Océ printers’ exceptional speed and print quality in live end-to-end book and photo book publishing. Case-bound products and photo books will be printed at blazing speeds on the latest Océ JetStream system. Demonstrations will show interior black and white and full-color printing of text and professional photographs, as well as dust jacket printing. Hardcover books will be bound in an offline bookbinding area using On Demand Machinery case binding equipment.

To demonstrate the possibilities of digital book publishing, Océ will produce a fully finished full-color book live at Print 09. The book, Where is My Birthday Cake? transforms a photographic web log created by professional photographer, Jason Lee, into a full-color case-bound book featuring his daughters Kristin and Kayla. The book illustrates how digital book production technology is powering popular self-publishing trends – transforming digital photos and web logs or blogs, into permanent artifacts in the form of books. The author, Jason Lee, will be in the booth on September 15, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM signing copies of the book.

Understanding Color Inkjet Costs with Accuracy
For some commercial printers, the new inkjet technologies introduce unique issues such as how to determine the true cost of producing a color print job. To address this, Océ has developed Océ TrueCost software, an integrated tool that enables print providers to calculate pixel-precise pricing, cost accounting and chargeback to capture more color profits and ROI from their Océ JetStream system. Being able to calculate the true cost of a color application accurately and understand the crossover point from offset to digital is critically important, especially in a difficult economy, and Océ is the first vendor to offer this capability.

Integrated MICR and Personalized Color Opportunities Continue to Grow
Marketers and print service providers can see a live TransPromo application that shows single pass color and MICR printing of convenience checks that meet CPSA security requirements with complete reliability, security and error recovery. Océ is the only source for this award-winning integrated MICR printing with CPSA certification. Using this capability, direct marketers can add greater personalization to statements and transaction documents, while taking advantage of Océ’s integrated MICR printing to streamline production workflow and reduce costs. Color plus image personalization presents another attractive opportunity to bring new ideas to existing customers and attract new business with unique visual communications. Océ in-booth demonstrations will include full color, personalized calendars created on the fly using Direct Smile software for personalized images. Booth visitors can scan their badges, select one of five images, then watch each durable, UV-coated personalized calendar print on the Océ CS665 Pro color system.

Sustainable Display Graphics
One of the most innovative – and sustainable – applications at Print 09 will be furniture and display items featured in the Océ booth. Made of Re-Board substrate and printed on the Océ Arizona 350 XT UV flatbed printer and finished on the Océ ProCut digital cutting table, these booth components demonstrate a sustainable, versatile solution for a wide variety of display graphics and other applications. Visitors can pick up their own Re-Board chair sample in the booth. In addition, attendees can see eye-catching point of purchase signs and stunning color CAD graphics created on the Océ ColorWave 600 printer, which produces no ozone, odor or fine powder emissions.

Package Prototyping Goes Completely Digital
In addition to sustainable display graphics, the Océ Arizona 350 XT printer and the Océ ProCut table will be used to demonstrate a complete, integrated system for digital package prototyping. Designers and packaging companies will see how they can quickly and easily print prototypes for focus groups and client presentations – even create custom short runs for test markets – and be assured that every piece will be consistent in color and fit. Most importantly, the restriction of printing on white paperboard is eliminated. With the Océ Arizona 350 XT printer plus the White Ink and Roll Media Options, users can print directly onto the actual package substrate.

Print-to-Web Applications Drive Immediate Response
As direct marketers focus on more targeted, higher-value campaigns that drive response, integration of print and web adds a new level of multi-channel communication. QR “quick response” codes – 2-D, cell-phone readable barcodes – represent the next evolution in customer acquisition, providing a print-to-web link to drive incremental value from digitally printed communications. At Print 09, Océ will show applications using COPI’s CodeZ QR code for immediate personalized interaction. Full color Océ CS130T Tandem printers will print CodeZ QR symbols embedded in ads in personalized editions of Chicago Where magazine. When scrolled with an enabled phone, the screen links to a page to make reservations at a restaurant, for example, and offer a discount.

Digital Printing Gives Newspapers New Life
As newspaper publishers wrestle with rising costs, changing expectations and a tough economy, Océ can help them adopt a new business model based on individualized, targeted and short run newspapers. Publishers can visit the Océ booth to see a demonstration of production of a customized newspaper that draws content from multiple sources, highlighting the new opportunities for publishers to update their business models by migrating newspapers to digital production and variable content.

Workflow Automation Across Applications
Reliable, flexible workflow is an essential part of all the new opportunities available for graphic arts and print professionals. As part of its Print 09 applications, Océ will demonstrate a variety of workflow solutions, including web-to-print, automated document factories and multi-vendor integration. These capabilities will help print providers improve their workflow and drive additional productivity from multivendor print environments and applications of all kinds.

“The Océ theme for Print 09, ‘The Power of Color, The Speed of Business,’ is especially relevant for graphic arts professionals. Océ solutions demonstrated in booth 1863 help create opportunities for print providers to drive more revenue, increase productivity and reduce their costs. The breadth and innovation of the technology reflect Océ leadership in markets that hold the most potential for customer success,” said Baboyian.
