The Saturday Evening Post announced today that Stephen George has joined the magazine as editor-in-chief. George, who will be responsible for the editorial direction, design, and content of the magazine, will begin his assignment immediately. Joan SerVaas, chief executive officer and publisher of The Saturday Evening Post, made the announcement today.

“We are thrilled to have Stephen join The Saturday Evening Post,” said SerVaas. “His diverse experience in creating great editorial at some of the nation’s leading general interest magazines is exactly what we need as we continue to re-brand the Post.”

George joins the Post from Better Homes and Gardens, where he served as deputy editor from 2002 to 2009. While there, George managed the Features and Family Matters sections of the magazine. He was responsible for assigning 15 features per month to staff editors and freelance writers while overseeing the editorial content for features in health, parenting, travel, money, and etiquette, to name a few. George was also responsible for lifestyle stories, editors’ blogs, and interactive surveys for the magazine Web site BHG.com.

During George’s career, he has held editorial positions at Prevention and Men’s Health magazines, authored four books, and written for USA Today, Reader’s Digest, Crain’s Chicago Business, and Forbes.

George holds a master’s degree in journalism from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism and is a graduate of the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in English and journalism.

SerVaas also announced that editorial veteran Patrick Perry will become director of development and executive editor of The Saturday Evening Post Society. The Saturday Evening Post Society, the nonprofit organization that oversees the magazine’s rich archives of fiction, art, and editorial content, has become a leader in providing health and medical advice in an easy-to-understand, practical way. Perry, who has been The Saturday Evening Post’s editor-in-chief for 31 years will begin his new assignment immediately while working with George on a smooth editorial transition at the magazine.

“We are excited that Pat has taken on this new challenge while continuing to play a key role within our management team,” said SerVaas. “Our redesigned July/August 2009 issue, which Pat led, is getting wonderful response from our readers. I am sure Pat will use that same energy in leading the Society and continuing to report on cutting-edge health advancements for the magazine.”
