Nature Publishing Group Uses MarkLogic Server to Launch Its Enhanced Search Platform

Thursday 30. July 2009 - Mark Logic Corporation, a leading provider of software for information-centric applications, today announced that Nature Publishing Group (NPG), a division of Macmillan Publishers Ltd dedicated to serving the academic, professional scientific, and medical communities, is using MarkLogic Server as its primary XML-based information platform.

Nature.com serves as a gateway to all of the content published by NPG. Powered by MarkLogic Server, the enhanced search functionality of nature.com now delivers faster and more precise results. Users can more effectively search up-to-date articles from all journals on nature.com, in addition to content from Nature News.
MarkLogic Server is also the repository for Palgrave Connect, Palgrave Macmillan’s eBook platform. Launched in February 2009 and powered by nature.com, Palgrave Connect offers libraries within academic institutions a flexible approach to building an eBook collection of Palgrave Macmillan books. Site licenses provide institutions with access to more than 4,000 eBooks, split into collections by subject area. These eBooks are indexed using a Mark Logic pipeline to extract the full text as well as metadata, including title, authors, year of publication, and various keywords. Since more metadata is automatically extracted from articles and added instantly to the MarkLogic Server, nature.com searches are faster and more precise. Improved indexing, including author, title, journal name, DOI and some keywords, enables more precise bibliographic queries.
“NPG is making MarkLogic Server a central part of its online infrastructure,” said Howard Ratner, chief technology officer, executive vice-president, Nature Publishing Group. “The enhanced nature.com search engine and the new eBooks platform for Palgrave Macmillan, Palgrave Connect, are the first examples of the services NPG plans to provide for its customers building on MarkLogic Server. Mark Logic was the obvious choice when selecting an XML repository. None of the alternatives had the speed, scalability, and domain expertise we required. I am really pleased at how quickly it has become the centerpiece of our content infrastructure.”
“People consume information at such a rapid clip, that organizations really need to step up their delivery speed and format,” said Tracy Eiler, vice president of marketing, Mark Logic. “NPG has done just that with their innovative nature.com site. MarkLogic Server has opened up these online opportunities to our customers, and it’s great to see NPG on the forefront of publishing.”
