Reliable packing materials count among the essential accessories needed to ensure that cylinders roll against one another in a constant manner day after day. Paper-based underpackings always used to keep a high share on the market although they are highly sensitive to squashing and present a swelling risk in the event of moisture ingress.
Not least, this was due to the fact that, every time a rubber blanket was replaced, and especially after a jam-up, it went almost without saying to change the entire packing as well just to be on the safe side. All paper sheets were destroyed in this way, and sometimes only after a short time of use.
Dimensionally stable Folabase underpacking foils made of polyester convince their users by maximum squashing resistance. They will not be damaged, and, in consequence, will not need to be replaced as a precaution even when an extreme partial press fold occurs due to a doublesheet which run into the press inadvertent or a cardboard sheet which fails to run in properly during package printing. These foils may continue operation, thus reducing both downtime and waste. Nonetheless, many print shops were reluctant to switch over to plastic base materials which are relatively hard when compared to cardboard sheets although, for instance, they present an extremely high tear resistance. This was the reason for Folex to develop a laminated foil which meets high demands in terms of printing technology, and consists of dimensionally stable polyester while presenting a convenient soft polyurethane content. From now on, a single Folabase Soft U will be needed only instead of having a base which consists of several paper layers. The new film’s thickness range has been adapted to match common cylinder recess dimensions. Finally, Folabase Soft U provides all the properties which have always been expected from cardboard.
