DRINKTEC 2009 EXPANDS ITS SECTION ON LIQUID FOOD. INGREDIENTS, TECHNOLOGIES AND EXPERTISE FOR INNOVATIVE DAIRY DRINKS

Thursday 16. July 2009 - The financial crisis, the slump in oil prices and falling raw-materials prices are also causing food prices to go through the floor. Retailing groups are even trying to use this in a targeted way to boost consumer spending.

The price of many foods has been, and is still being, reduced, especially milk products, which is popular with customers, but narrows margins. All this is making it essential to optimise all the stages involved in production of dairy drinks. Everything that is technologically and economically useful in this regard is exhibited at drinktec 2009, the World Fair for Beverage and Liquid Food Technology, which covers the whole industry from ingredients and production technology through to logistics.

In 2008 the developments in the milk market were characterised by the reactions of all those involved in the market to the drastic price rise in 2007. Milk production rose, consumers bought less, and demand for milk powder on the world market declined. The result was a definite increase in pricing pressure, especially for classic dairy products such as UHT milk or quark.

Innovations with growth potential
Nevertheless innovative product concepts continue to offer dairies growth potential. For example the drinking yogurt sector has been expanding disproportionately quickly for years. The growth in milk-based drinks is also in double figures. And with its valuable ingredients such as proteins and minerals coupled with a very low fat content, whey is a successful base for refreshing sports and energy drinks.

All the raw materials for these modern dairy drinks are being presented at drinktec 2009. Except for water, sugar and acidity, a raw material generally contains all the ingredients which are necessary to produce a standardised finished product. Using raw materials gives dairies a more reliable outcome and increases production efficiency. As well as raw materials as a complete solution for producing dairy products, individual ingredients for the dairy industry are also being marketed, for example sweetening systems and flavourings.

drinktec 2009: Everything for dairy industry professionals
drinktec 2009 brings together suppliers of raw materials, process technology and logistics in one compact fair. In no less than six exhibition halls, with a total floor space of 66,000 square metres (Halls A2, A5, A6, B4, B5 and B6), product-specific process technologies for manufacturing and processing beverages, milk and liquid foods are being presented at the New Munich Trade Fair Centre. In addition there is cross-sector process technology in Halls A3 and A4 with exhibitors such as GEA, Norit, Südmo and Alfa Laval. In Hall B1 trade fair visitors will find the raw materials and ingredients that are also so important to the dairy industry. Exhibitors such as Tate & Lyle and Beneo-Palatinit are presenting special sweetening concepts, their properties and possible use in drinks.

Also, on 17 September the first Dairy Technology Award is being presented, acknowledging the successful implementation of technical innovation in the European dairy and food industry.

“With all these measures we have further developed the liquid food sector,” explains Exhibition Director Petra Westphal. “By liquid food we do not just mean dairy products, but all liquid foodstuffs, including vinegar, oil, soya, mustard, ketchup and sauces. As a result drinktec also covers the process chain of companies that are at home in markets other than the beverage industry.” And which should definitely come to Munich for drinktec from 14 to 19 September 2009.
