Chevron Phillips Chemical Offers a PPS Resin for Nearly Every Application

Friday 10. July 2009 - With the completion of a new 10,000 metric ton per year polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) plant in Borger, Texas, Chevron Phillips Chemical Company LP (Chevron Phillips Chemical) offers the widest array of PPS polymer types and the world’s largest PPS capacity available in the plastics industry.

Ryton PPS is used in applications ranging from automotive engine mounts to hair straightener housings, and hard disk drive components to chemical pumps. Additionally, Ryton PPS polymers may be spun into fibers for woven and non-woven fabrics that are used in harsh environments, while Xtel PPS-based alloys are blow molded into turbo charger air ducts and extruded into piping for down-hole oilfield applications. With such a wide range of possibilities, no single PPS polymer can fill all the performance needs of these applications. Fortunately for customers, Chevron Phillips Chemical is ready and able to meet their needs with a broad portfolio of PPS polymers and compound technology.

“We specialize in polymers with heat, chemical, and corrosion resistance as well as dimensional stability,” said Mark Amelunke, general manager of Chevron Phillips Chemical’s engineering polymers group. “In any given application, the properties required may vary. Chevron Phillips Chemical’s team of professionals can help you ‘dial in’ your requirements and select the most appropriate resin for your needs.”

Chevron Phillips Chemical produces everything from low molecular weight, finely divided powder resins for coating slurries to high molecular weight polymer for thick-walled extrusions. The company also offers other unique capabilities including chain-branching of PPS polymers for improved performance in extrusion applications, solid state molecular weight enhancement (curing) for superior high temperature performance, special wash treatments for improved blend compatibility and alloying, and proprietary process technology for manufacturing low chlorine content PPS polymers.

Ryton PPS and Xtel PPS alloys are versatile and well-suited for a multitude of end-use products. A summary of available resins and compounds is below:
