Smurfit-Stone Recycling and Waste Solutions Featured at Waste Expo, June 8-11, in Las Vegas

Monday 08. June 2009 - Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation, one of the world's largest paper recyclers, will spotlight the benefits of its innovative partnerships and comprehensive recycling and waste solutions at the 41st annual Waste Expo, June 8-11, at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

“Our recycling and waste management solutions benefit communities, businesses and waste haulers by turning what was once an expense into a revenue stream,” said Mike Oswald, senior vice president of Smurfit-Stone’s Recycling division. “By capturing components previously considered waste, Smurfit-Stone helps businesses and communities reduce waste, generate income and preserve natural resources.”

With 28 plants in the United States offering comprehensive recycling and waste solutions, Smurfit-Stone is investing in automated sort systems and focusing on strategic partnerships with cities and waste haulers to dig deeper into the waste stream.

In the past year, Smurfit-Stone collaborated with Waste Services Inc. (WSI) to operate WSI’s Taft and Sanford materials recycling facilities (MRFs) near Orlando, Fla., and partnered with Advanced Disposal Services to operate its MRFs in Jacksonville, Fla., and Atlanta, Ga.

Smurfit-Stone also has invested in production tracking equipment to improve customer service and efficiency by identifying and reducing the causes of downtime on its sort lines and balers.

Smurfit-Stone collected approximately 6.6 million tons of recyclables in 2008. In addition to benefiting communities and business partners, Smurfit-Stone’s recycling operations also provide a secure source of fiber for its mill system.
