UPM JOINS WWF IN A SYMBOLIC ACTION AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE

Friday 27. March 2009 - UPM has signed up for WWF's global Earth Hour 2009 event, and will turn off the lights in Group Head Office in Helsinki, Finland on 28 March 2009 from 8:30pm to 9:30pm. This symbolic action demonstrates that UPM is seriously playing its part in mitigating climate change.

“By joining this global event, UPM stresses the importance of taking action and seeking solutions to minimize the impact on climate change. The company also sets an important example for all stakeholders to witness and follow,” states Ms Anja Silvennoinen, Senior Vice President, Energy Business Area.

In its daily operations, UPM aims to reduce its overall fossil carbon dioxide emissions from both direct and indirect sources. To achieve this, UPM has invested remarkably in CO2-neutral biomass based energy generation. For the time being over 62% of the fuels used at the mills power plants are renewable. In addition the company has improved its energy efficiency and increased the use of recycled fibre in its processes. All this has resulted in a 40% reduction in the company’s fossil CO2 emissions per tonne of paper since 1990.

According to Earth Hour 2009 organiser, WWF, 2848 cities, towns and municipalities in 84 countries have already committed to the event.
