Smith Micro Receives Patent For JPEG Compression Technology

Thursday 26. March 2009 - Company Continues Compression Leadership with New StuffIt(R) Patent That Allows JPEG Images to be Compressed Up to 30 Percent with No Loss of Image Quality

Smith Micro Software, Inc. (NASDAQ:SMSI) today announced that it was issued U.S. Patent No. 7,502,514 “System and Method for Lossless Compression of Already Compressed Files” by the U.S Patent and Trademark Office. The new ‘514 patent extends to a system and method for losslessly compressing already compressed files including, but not limited to, archive files like ZIP, and media formats such as MP3 and JPEGs.

“JPEG is a dominant image format, and historically difficult to further compress, which makes compressing previously compressed files – while maintaining the original image quality – invaluable,” said Darryl Lovato, Vice President of Advanced Technology at Smith Micro Software, and co-author of the new patent. “The issuance of this critical patent further strengthens our position as a leader in the compression market and further highlights that StuffIt provides the best all around compression, especially with JPEG and other image files.”

The Smith Micro patented JPEG image compression technology enables our line of StuffIt desktop and wireless products to reduce the size of JPEG files up to 30 percent – with no loss of image quality. The newly granted compression technology patent is one of several that make StuffIt a valuable compression tool for a wide variety of customers.

This new StuffIt patent represents another technology breakthrough that continues to establish Smith Micro’s leadership in the field of file compression innovations for PC and mobile devices. As utilized in StuffIt Wireless, Smith Micro’s cutting edge media compression technologies provide an important solution for Wireless operators looking to mitigate the ever-increasing load on their 3G data networks.
