Efficiency in your formulation: BYK-3520 & BYK-3521 – multifunctional additives for aqueous coatings

Friday 13. February 2009 - The new multifunctional additives BYK-3520 and BYK-3521 combine excellent flow and defoaming properties with exceptional substrate wetting. Both products can easily be incorporated and are compatible in many coating systems.

The right choice of an additive is an ongoing challenge for the coating formulator. The selection criteria of the additive are closely related to the right resin with its system-specific effectiveness or the substrate to be coated. Moreover, additives may cause negative side effects such as foam, craters, turbidity or the deterioration of mechanical properties.

BYK-3520 and BYK-3521 are, by contrast, multifunctional additives which provide multiple positive effects in a single product. Both combine excellent flow with outstanding defoaming properties and therefore eliminate all kinds of surface defects. BYK-3520 and BYK-3521 both offer exceptional substrate wetting, even on demanding substrates such as wood. Both additives are broadly compatible in many coating systems and they are easy to incorporate.

Beside the application technology aspects, the additives provide decisive advantages in the supply and value chain. The use of only one single product in a system increases product safety, lowers product complexity and reduces inventory. Plus: In many cases the multifunctional additives also reduce material costs in the formulation. Application fields for BYK-3520 and BYK-3521 are wood, furniture, industrial and textile coatings and printing inks.
