UPM-Kymmene (UK) Ltd & NAPM Two Sides Initiative

UPM, the world's largest producer of graphic papers, has pledged its support to the National Association of Paper Merchants (NAPM) Two Sides Initiative.

Monday 22. December 2008 - UPM, the world's largest producer of graphic papers, has pledged its support to the National Association of Paper Merchants (NAPM) Two Sides Initiative.

Speaking about UPM’s support John Sanderson, Director of Environmental Affairs UK, said: “The Two Sides initiative is a valuable addition to improving our understanding of sustainable paper consumption and one which matches UPM’s approach and outlook. There is a clear need for a balanced view on this topic.”

He adds: “As the front-runner of the new forest industry, UPM is committed to sustainable paper production and clearly demonstrates this through environmental best practice and continuous improvement.”

In addition to its environmental performance UPM has developed a number of interactive tools to highlight its approach. These include: TraceIt – developed in conjunction with publishers, Otto, Axel Springer and The Guardian; and UPM Sustainable Forestry, both of which are available online at www.upm-kymmene.com/traceit and www.upm-kymmene.com/sustainableforestry

Martyn Eustace, heading Two Sides for the NAPM, expressed his delight on the news of UPM’s involvement. “We now have all the major Mill and Merchant Groups behind Two Sides as well as growing support from other companies involved in the graphic communication sector supply chain such as Sun Chemicals, Fuji, Haymarket Publishing, Duplo and Trinity Mirror Printing”

“Two Sides”, says Eustace, “sets out to show that print and paper is an environmentally sustainable communication medium and we will set out the facts clearly, authoritatively and regularly. In January the first Meeting of the Print and Paper Sustainability Group will be held to set out the course of ‘Two Sides’. The Group is deliberately drawn from the whole industry ensuring that ‘Two Sides’ focuses upon the sustainability of the whole Graphic Communications Supply Chain”.

Eustace also has given notice that Two Sides now needs the support of the Printing Sector. “So far”, says Eustace, “Two Sides has been funded largely by suppliers to the Print sector. It’s now time for Printers to get on board and early in the new year, backed by the BPIF, there will be a major campaign to get widespread printer support. It should not be left to a generous few to sustain the funding”.

Printers can join Two Sides for a modest subscription of £25 per million of UK turnover. Although there will be a minimum of £150.
