“Glyoxal: The Sustainable Solution for Your Business”

Tuesday 07. October 2008 - Details on the chemical intermediate glyoxal are now available from BASF through a website and a leaflet that bear the heading "Glyoxal: The Sustainable Solution for Your Business."

These publications provide information on the properties of glyoxal in various applications and on the extensive services BASF offers for this product. The eight-page English-language leaflet may be downloaded or ordered in print via the Internet at www.glyoxal-solutions.com. Moreover, the website offers additional information on new glyoxal applications.

Glyoxal, an intermediate that is readily biodegradable, is used as a biocide, a polymer cross-linking agent and a sulfur scavenger. As a 40-percent solution, glyoxal cross-links starch and cellulose in paper and textile production. This improves the tear resistance of high-quality papers and allows the production of wrinkle-free textiles. BASF has all the raw materials it needs to make glyoxal and produces this intermediate at its sites in Ludwigshafen, Germany, and Geismar, USA. In this way the company offers high reliability and flexibility of supply for its customers. A range of services complete BASF’s offering, for example registration of glyoxal under the EU REACH regulation that is a topical issue these days. “We are registering glyoxal for our customers under a variety of authorization schemes and provide comprehensive advice on current legal requirements,” said glyoxal innovations manager Dr. Henning Althoefer.
