Sappi Fine Paper North America Named as CIO 100 Award Honoree for Excellence in Information Technology

Tuesday 19. August 2008 - CIO magazine has named Sappi Fine Paper North America as a recipient of its 2008 CIO 100 Award. The annual award program recognizes only 100 organizations worldwide that exemplify the highest level of operational and strategic excellence in information technology (IT). The 2008 awards recognize innovative executives and organizations that use IT effectively to create business value.

Sappi is being honored for an IT initiative in which the company developed an integrated knowledge management (KM) system to control the more than $600 million spend on raw materials. The solution incorporated data from various systems namely plant floor control, quality, Mill Execution (MES) and ERP systems which resulted in a single view of costs and input material usage. Information is now available in near real time with detail never before possible. Sappi has successfully bundled data into knowledge so decisions are clear and actionable immediately with control over financial implications.

“I am proud that Sappi’s efforts to use innovative IT solutions to create business value has been recognized by CIO magazine and the CIO 100 Award,” stated Bob Wittstein, Vice President of Procurement and CIO. “With our newly developed integrated knowledge management system, we are able to better manage costs while we procure the right materials for the business.” Wittstein continued, “Being selected for this award along with top global companies such as Dow Chemical, Motorola, Hewlett-Packard, and AT & T is an honor and speaks volumes about our IT organization.”

“The CIO 100 honors organizations that have used technology in innovative ways to generate value to the business,” said Abbie Lundberg, Editor in Chief of CIO magazine. “Unlike other top lists, it’s not just about who’s biggest- it’s about who’s doing the most interesting and relevant things.”

The 2008 CIO 100 awards will be presented on August 24 in Colorado Springs, CO. Each year, the CIO 100 Awards honor 100 companies that demonstrate excellence and achievement in a chosen theme. Recipients of the CIO 100 award were selected by teams of CIO magazine editors and writers. Judging criteria includes the depth and breadth of applicants’ practices, their creativity, and specific measurable results and markers achieved.
