ReadSoft delivers census software to Ecuador

Thursday 17. July 2008 - ReadSoft has been trusted to deliver software to compile information about 1.65 million households in Ecuador.

The project is run by the National Statistic and Censuses Institute of Ecuador (INEC), together with ReadSoft’s local partner Ecuasistemas. This is the first time computers are used to scan and interpret information about the country’s population. The project is aimed to poll 13.8 million Ecuadorians in order to evaluate the needs for future government programs.
The prestigious project was won by ReadSoft’s partner Ecuasistemas, a local Ecuador IT-company and a selected supplier to INEC. Ecuador uses a system called SELBEN to identify the needs for social programs. Through different surveys, SELBEN establishes the possible beneficiaries for the social programs and also measures the impact of the investments made. Valid information is crucial in order to provide a fair distribution of the resources assigned by the government. To gather this information, SELBEN relies on the National Statistic and Censuses Institute of Ecuador (INEC) the government department with responsibility for collection, analysis and publication of socio-economic data in Ecuador.

The collected information will be a single registration of beneficiaries that will enable government’s social programs approval. It is a task of great magnitude that embraces the most vulnerable families in Ecuador. This activity began in June and it will last six months. The information collected is the data of each family and its members, their life conditions, and will also update the country’s database The Social Registration.

“Using Document Automation software to put together a large-scale census project like this one means modernizing the process of producing basic data for statistics in a fast and reliable way. The solution we provide together with ReadSoft will enable INEC to capture and identify the demographic and socioeconomic characteristics in Ecuador and in the long run make sure that help reaches the neediest in the country,” says Ovidio Morla, President of Ecuasistemas S.A..

By upgrading the database in SELBEN, INEC won’t have to deal with the monotonous, slow, and expensive task of manually keying in information into computers. By automating the process, INEC can compile the necessary statistics very quickly and accurately. At the same time, resources are freed up for more important tasks.
