New development in VSOP series

Friday 23. May 2008 - SCA Packaging opts for Drent Goebel’s VSOP 1250

SCA Packaging in Italy purchased a six color VSOP 1250 for its pre-print liner production. The machine will be installed in SCA’s production facility in Cornuda. Delivery of the press is planned for early Autumn 2009, the reason for the extended delivery time is the fact that the press will have a print length of 66 inch (1680 mm), a new development for Drent Goebel.

SCA Packaging’s plant in Cornuda already produces pre-print liner but on older equipment. The choice for re-investment was between sheet-fed and web-fed presses, of which sheet-fed is the most commonly used technology nowadays. SCA Italy has practical experience with both technologies and clearly sees the advantages of web-fed printing so the path was clearly set. The press has 6 print towers, Butler unwind and rewind splicers for continuous production and Eltromat Corecon and Web video 3000. The choice for curing is still undecided.

The press will be used to produce wine and liquor boxes and boxes for consumer electronics. Since these come in many different shapes and sizes, the sleeve concept of the VSOP press fits perfectly with the demands from SCA.

Drent Goebel engineers are working hard on redesigning the machine for the 66 inch sleeves. Major changes have to be made to the ink train, dampening system and sleeve handling system. With this print length the average weight of a sleeve will be around 130 kilogram’s.

Parallel to this design, an investigation into possibilities for wider web-widths concluded that the ideal print size would be 1,700 mm width x 1,700 mm cut-off. Various customers in the liquid packaging and cardboard segments have shown their interest in this new development. Drent Goebel believes that with this new development it has entered a new era for the VSOP and is looking forward for this new forthcoming challenge.
