Your in-house binding solution for hardcover bookSteelBinding for all needs: from small to large volumes

Tuesday 13. May 2008 - Unibind is a Belgian international company specialized for almost 30 years in the innovative design, manufacture and distribution of document binding systems and is the world market leader in hot melt document binding.

More specifically, Unibind offers premium staple, punch and resin binding applications based on its patented SteelBinding concept. Every transparent or hardbook cover is provided with a U-formed steel spine that protects the binding. Moreover, high-end cover finishing and accessories add a professional look to the bound documents. As a result the Unibind product is worldwide known for its outstanding quality, user-friendliness and long lasting performance, offering the perfect solutions for in-house binding. As the systems are used for classic office purposes, they also proved to be ideal for personalized digital photobooks or novels, the newest growing selling markets of the company.

In-house binding
The need for in-house binding systems increased rapidly around the turn of the century when the quality of digital printing improved remarkably. Digital printing started delivering high-quality consumer print, personalized notebooks, agenda’s, calendars, class yearbooks, novels etc. In comparison with traditional offset printing the new technology allowed low circulation print jobs – even unique pieces – in different formats, fast print runs… The digital personalized printing market boomed worldwide and the binding on demand and in-house binding industry followed inseparably.

Today’s customer prefers a full in-house system for printing and binding jobs without compromising on quality, instead of outsourcing. Unibind can deliver a complete binding tool according to each customer’s needs, frequency of use or budget. Even the most inexpensive binding system offers high quality, fast binding times and is maintenance-free.
Unibind also created the BBC10. The machine binds hardcover books on an industrial level that no other binder on the market can accomplish.

The decision is easy, when comparing the produced quality, user-friendliness or low purchasing and running costs of SteelBinding with the high minimum circulation conditions, production and transport costs of outsourcing. Accordingly the number of Unibind customers worldwide keeps growing on a daily basis. At present, the machines, covers and accessories are being sold in more than 120 countries daily.

Resin SteelBinding
The Resin SteelBinding system binds documents in a transparent or hardbook cover fully automatically, quickly and with high quality. The result is a super-strong, permanent bound document. Nevertheless, removing bound papers and/or adding new ones is still possible.

The system requires a specialized Resin SteelBinding machine in combination with a Unibind cover. Unibind offers different types of Resin SteelBinding machines on the market. Depending on the type you can bind up to 400 books per hour. All binding machines are also maintenance-free.

Binding with a Resin SteelBinding machine is very easy. Your work in done in 3 seconds; the machine does the rest. You first insert the pages in the empty cover. This cover has a specified spine size according to the amount of pages. Then place the cover on the heating compartment of the binding machine. In contact with the steel spine, the machine starts up fully automatically and needs no warm-up time. Because of the heat, the resin inside the cover melts. The steel spine prevents it from being absorbed by the cover finishing, so the paper edges can sink into the heated resin. When the machine stops heating, the resin cools down and captures the pages. While the U-formed spine protects the binding on three sides, the document can then be used.

BCC10
The BCC10 is the company’s newest industrial binding machine for hardcover books and unique for its market. It offers a total solution that combines maximum productivity with maximum reliability. You only need to place the books into the machine and adjust the machine to the right spine size and format. The BCC10 then binds, crimps and cools automatically: first the resin on the steel spine is heated and becomes liquid, so the pages sink in the melted resin. The BBC10 then crimps the spine to reduce the amount of spine sizes needed in stock. Crimping also improves the overall aesthetics of the book. Finally the books are being cooled down to guarantee a perfect and permanent result. The BBC10 is therefore the perfect solution for professional and intensive usage. It can bind up to 400 pre-assembled hardcover books per hour and operates as a closed environment to provide maximum safety.

Punch SteelBinding
The Unibind Punch SteelBinding system is unique in combining wire binding with a full hardcover book, which means that the wire binding is enfolded when the book is closed.
Moreover, the wire binding system is very suitable for thick, non-flexible and laminated
(photo) paper or for documents that need to lay open flatly. For all kind of document applications such as maps, agendas, presentations, music sheets… Unibind developed the Your SteelBook products, the Your PhotoBook gamma was especially created for traditional photo paper used in minilabs, kiosks, for analogue images…

The Punch SteelBinding products come with self-adhesive endsheets. First you simply punch the endsheets and the document and bind them together on a wire spine, this either with the Unibind wire binder or with another punch binding system. Then remove the self-adhesive strips from the endsheets. Finally press them firmly to the interior of the hardbook to get a professionally bound document with the highest precision and quality.

Staple SteelBinding
As Unibind is innovating continuously, it recently also developed the Staple SteelBinding system for occasional or out-of-office use like binding at home, at the hotel, in class… More specifically the new My SteelCover and My PhotoBook with enclosed self-adhesive endsheets make it possible to bind documents without the investment in a specialized machine, only a simple stapler is needed. And the document is bound in no time. The result is a secure and permanent binding, giving a professional look to the document since the staples are fully covered by the endsheets.
