Packaging

Award winner at Interpack

Monday 05. May 2008 - rlc focuses on design & finishing

COPACO member rlc | packaging group is show-casing the latest innovations in its packaging and finishing portfolio at Inter-pack 2008. At the show, rlc will be presenting metallic and multi-sensory fin-ishing effects and its latest concepts for unusual forms of packaging. One of the stand’s highlights is the packaging concept rlc | shapeline, which was re-cently honored with the iF packaging award. This year, rlc’s Design Compe-tence Center brandpack | the packaging architects will be taking part in Inter-pack for the first time.

iF packaging award for rlc | shapeline
Shapeline is a packaging concept that takes on the shape of its contents. rlc will be demonstrating this product at Interpack using a tube of toothpaste from the fictitious brand “Synergy”. Part of the concept involves bending lines that adapt to the shape of the product. In addition to offering scope for differentiation at the P.O.S., this pa-ckaging also uses up to 15 percent less material. The folding cartons can be filled and closed on standard cartonizers. Nesting cuts the amount of space required du-ring transport, a benefit that also applies through every link in the process chain inc-luding logistics and shelving.

Moreover, rlc will also be displaying enhanced packaging solutions designed in the shape of the human body, which the COPACO company markets under the brand name rlc | bodyline. PET designs for gift sets and promotion packaging demonstrate how packaging designs can be used today to generate brand differentiation.

Finishing by rlc
rlc has responded to the sustained trend towards silver and metal effects in pre-mium packaging by expanding its finishing technologies and grouping its portfolio into the brand rlc | metal effects. Thanks to the recent installation of a 9-color double coating UV press with cold foil transfer unit, and the expansion of its hot foil em-bossing system over the last half year, rlc is now able to implement all types of me-tallic finishing on both card and PET. The COPACO company was the first folding carton manufacturer in Europe to implement cold foil transfer as an inline process, thereby opening up new design options in packaging. This technology closes the gap between offset printing with metallic inks and hot foil embossing. The high reg-ister accuracy of the metallic designs also makes it possible to boost counterfeit protection in inline printing through the packaging design alone.

In addition to these optical effects, rlc has joined forces with cooperation partners in the field of multi-sensory technology to demonstrate the possibilities for harnessing the potential of sight, touch and smell in print products.

Synergy effects for packaging development
brandpack | the packaging architects is celebrating its debut at Interpack. rlc’s De-sign Competence Center was founded last year and already uses the dimensions of graphic design, material, construction and finishing for packaging development. At InnovationParc Packaging, brandpack will be applying “shapeline” to the fictitious brand “Synergy” to show how scope for differentiation can be generated by linking the four design dimensions. brandpack, rlc and other partners in the packaging value creation chain are the forces behind the “Synergy” brand. brandpack acted as the central interface for the project. This concept demonstrates the optimal coopera-tion between the partners in the packaging value creation chain and shows how re-sources can be exploited to the full with “Synergy”.

rlc | packaging group
With its sites Leunisman GmbH (Hanover), Colorpack GmbH (Berlin), Pharmacenter GmbH (Berlin) and BSC Drukarnia Opakowan (Poznan), the COPACO company rlc | packaging group specializes in premium, general and pharmaceutical packaging. rlc enhanced the specialization of its sites last year by making the biggest invest-ment in the company’s history (amounting to more than Euro 20 million). The strat-egy has proven a resounding success. rlc was able to achieve two-figure growth again in 2007, recording sales of Euro 91.6 million, up 14 percent on the previous year.
