HP Simplifies UNIX Deployment with New Operating Environments

Wednesday 09. April 2008 - HP today introduced four new operating environments (OEs) with the latest release of HP-UX 11i v3, Update 2. Designed to simplify UNIX deployments on HP Integrity servers, the new OEs enable customers to reduce costs and accelerate time to solution for immediate out-of-the-box productivity.

The OEs are HP-tested and pre-integrated to ease software management from purchase to installation to updates. They deliver fully integrated UNIX virtualization and high availability features, as well as a full range of HP software, with the HP-UX 11i operating system, in a single, easy-to-manage package.

The four OE offerings, Base, Virtual Server, High Availability and Data Center, allow any size business to rapidly and efficiently integrate a complete UNIX solution into its Integrity server environment. As a result, customers avoid potential errors and achieve faster time to solution by simplifying the manual effort typically associated with installing a fully-functional UNIX environment. For example, with the Data Center OE, customers can install more than 150 different software components in just nine steps—compared to the 35 steps required for IBM AIX and 87 for Sun Solaris.

Simplified UNIX deployment drives customer acceptance

Many businesses want to optimize utilization and performance of UNIX, but are unsure as to the software needed to support their current and future requirements. These customers can benefit from the simplicity and flexibility of the new HP-UX 11i v3 OEs, which include:

Base OE (BOE) provides the HP-UX 11i operating system for customer who require robust UNIX functionality
Virtual Server OE (VSE-OE) provides the full complement of HP 11i virtualization software for customers seeking higher resource utilization or embarking on consolidation projects
High-Availability OE (HA-OE) provides HP Serviceguard clustering and related high availability software for customers’ business-critical applications
Data Center OE (DC-OE) includes VSE-OE and HA-OE software for customers seeking both flexibility through virtualization and high availability
Current HP-UX 11i customers can deploy simple software upgrades to support their changing application workloads and help bolster business growth. Support contracts entitle existing customers to upgrade to HP-UX 11i v3 with the new OEs at no charge.

Advancing HP-UX 11i versatility

The latest release of HP-UX 11i v3 Update 2 also delivers improved performance. In networking and data access, customers can achieve up to a 100 percent increase in network speed, as well as continued acceleration of the mass storage stack, which controls I/O devices such as SCSI logical units. In addition, Update 2 simplifies blade management and consolidation while advancing multi-OS usability. The new release facilitates upgrades by enabling virtual partitions on v3 to combine HP-UX 11i v1, v2 with v3 on a single machine.

Since its introduction in February 2007, customers have recognized the demonstrated benefits offered by HP-UX 11i v3. For example, Waterloo, Ontario-based Campana Systems Inc., a long time HP-UX customer, recently deployed HP-UX 11i v3 on HP Integrity servers to enhance security and performance.

“HP-UX 11i v3 on HP Integrity Servers offers balanced performance and more than enough capacity to support our most demanding workloads,” said Paul Haygarth, Technical Services Project Manager, Campana Systems Inc. “We have enjoyed the robustness of HP-UX 11i for several years — the latest version has an outstanding record of reliability and availability.”

New benchmark results – winning (again) with v3

Customers can deploy HP-UX 11i on HP Integrity servers with confidence across a variety of UNIX applications, including those requiring exceptionally high performance.

Proving its high performance in the most demanding data warehouse-type workloads, HP recently completed the only single-system10-terabyte TPC-H benchmark(1) published to date. The benchmark used a 64-processor HP Integrity Superdome running HP-UX 11i v3 Update 1. This benchmark demonstrated a more than 20 percent performance increase over results with HP-UX 11i v3’s initial release, and 15 percent price-performance improvement over a similar benchmark using the IBM p570 with Power6. Other winning results over the past 12 months include industry benchmarks ranging from TPC-H to TPC-C to SPECjAppServer2004 to SPECint_rate2000, run on Superdome to entry class servers. The results of these benchmarks demonstrate that HP-UX 11i provides customers headroom to grow.

Availability and pricing

The new OEs are available for HP-UX 11i v3 Update 2, on both HP 9000 and Integrity servers. HP-UX 11i v3 Update 2 is currently available.
