HP Unveils Software to Help Telecom Operators Automate Network Management

Thursday 24. January 2008 - HP today announced significant software advances that are designed to help telecom operators migrate to more advanced operations support systems (OSS) environments.

Telecom operators rely on OSS solutions to automate the management of wireless, wired and broadband networks and to assure quality of service to customers.

The new features built into HP TeMIP Software 6.0 and HP Service Activator Software 5.0, which are part of the HP Next Generation Operations Support Systems (NG OSS) portfolio, help operators achieve measurable business results: faster service activation, better mean time-to-repair and, ultimately, greater customer loyalty.

More than 400 customers worldwide already use HP OSS software solutions.

“These advancements reflect HP’s significant R&D investment and almost 20 years of OSS experience,” said Ananda Subbiah, vice president, Solutions, Communications, Media and Entertainment, HP. “HP has built the broadest OSS portfolio in the industry, and we will continue to provide the recognized industry leadership, standards-based solutions and deep expertise that operators need for next-generation OSS solutions.”

Enhancements in HP TeMIP Software 6.0

HP TeMIP Software is a highly automated, fault-management solution that provides operators with a single view of all elements and systems across multiple network types. The new version is able to:

diagnose problems faster, alert the customer and speed the repair with new pattern discovery techniques and filtering enhancements;
reduce project costs through integration standards and protocols that help implement NG OSS “plug-and-play” principles; and
make more efficient use of hardware resources through support for virtualization and multiple operating systems.
To facilitate seamless migration, the new version is fully compatible with previous versions.

Mobiltel, a part of MobilKom Austria Group (MAG), provides 3G wireless voice and data services to 5 million customers in Bulgaria. Recently, Mobiltel deployed its Umbrella Network Management System (UNMS) based on HP TeMIP Software. UNMS is designed to manage MobilTel’s own wireless network as well as those of MAG operators in other countries such as Macedonia. Mobiltel’s ability to manage multiple national networks enabled MAG to realize significant operational efficiencies and cost savings.

“With HP TeMIP, our UNMS provides end-to-end control of our network and our value-added services,” said Roni Babikian, head of the Network Operations Center, Mobiltel. “With success in Bulgaria, we were able to extend UNMS so that we manage, from a single console, all infrastructures including transport for MAG operators in other countries.”

Babikian discusses Mobiltel’s deployment of HP TeMIP Software in a video interview available at http://hp.telecomtv.com/cmetv/mobiltel.

HP has been recognized by the TeleManagement Forum as a leader in implementing open standard interfaces in OSS. The new version of HP TeMIP includes support for OSS-through-Java (OSS-J) interfaces and XML/SOAP, as do other solutions in the HP NG OSS portfolio.

HP TeMIP Software also offers a web services interface for support of standards such as MTOSI (multi-technology operations systems interface).

Enhancements in HP Service Activator Software 5.0

HP Service Activator Software automates – and accelerates – the complex configuration processes that turn a customer order into an activated, ready-to-use service. The latest version of the software streamlines the service fulfillment process by further automating core activation processes and integrating them with order management and inventory.

A smaller operator can now reduce risks and costs with a single solution that integrates the full order management, inventory and activation process and allows instant service monitoring. For larger telecom operators, the open architecture of HP Service Activator can now accommodate multiple solutions on a single platform and provide operators with greater deployment flexibility. Also, operators of all sizes will be able to manage growth more easily by taking advantage of new features that deliver very high scalability.

The HP Service Activator platform offers pre-packaged solutions for specific business applications: virtual private networks, metro Ethernet and residential IP (Internet Protocol) services.

HP Service Activator MSS for Cisco-based telecom environments

HP also announced the HP Service Activator Solution for Managed Services (HPSA-MSS), a version that is integrated with technologies from Cisco Systems. HPSA-MSS is a pre-packaged solution that automates the activation and management of enterprise IP-based services such as voice-over-IP, wireless LAN and security services, which are being offered by operators to their business customers.

With HPSA-MSS, telecom operators can deploy IP-based communication services for businesses of any size and manage them more efficiently. HPSA-MSS takes advantage of Cisco CNS Configuration Engine, Cisco Unified Communications 500 Series for Small Business, Cisco 800, 1800, 2800 and 3800 Series Integrated Services Routers, Cisco Unified Communications Manager and Cisco Unified Communications Manager Express, among other products.

HPSA-MSS is available initially in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Both companies will sell the solution.

“Cisco and HP are committed to helping telecom operators serve their business customers,” said Paolo Campoli, senior director, Service Providers Solutions Development Europe, Cisco. “By integrating HP Service Activator with Cisco managed services solutions, telecom operators can help businesses deploy unified communications services more quickly and at lower costs.”
