Fuji Xerox’s Integrated Recycling System in China Starts Operation

Thursday 17. January 2008 - Industry First--Collects Used Products and Cartridges From All Over China Aiming at "Zero Landfill," "No Pollution" and "No Illegal Disposal"

Fuji Xerox Co., has established an integrated recycling system in China to recycle used products including copy machines, printers and cartridges, which it collects from throughout China (excluding Hong KongNote: 1, MacaoNote: 1 and Taiwan), to be disassembled and separated at its plant into 64 categories, including iron, aluminum, lens, glass and copper, to return to raw material. Fuji Xerox holds an opening ceremony of the plant today and starts operation.

Note 1 The collection and recycling of used products in Hong Kong and Macao are covered by Fuji Xerox’s Asia-Pacific integrated recycling system based in Thailand.

The recycling site is Fuji Xerox Eco-Manufacturing (Suzhou) Co., Ltd. in Suzhou Industrial Park, Jiangsu Province which is wholly owned by Fuji Xerox. Total investment is approximately 650 million yen, and disassembling and recycling capacity cover up to 15,000 machines and 500,000 cartridges per year, and the recycling rate targets at 96 percent for products and 99.9 percent for cartridges. It plans to process 4,000 machines and 120,000 cartridges for the first year, 2008

In order to recover products from customers throughout China, Fuji Xerox (China) Ltd., Fuji Xerox’s sales company in China, developed logistics network together with Fuji Xerox under the cooperation of MITSUI & CO. (SHANGHAI) LTD., Tri-Net China Logistics Co. Ltd. and China Post Logistics Co., Ltd. Fuji Xerox (China) started product and cartridge recovery in June 2007 in some major cities, and will cover the whole country following the recycling site’s operation commencement.

In order to thoroughly manage logistics of processes from recovering products to completing recycling, Fuji Xerox introduced a tracking system. Using this system, Fuji Xerox Eco-Manufacturing (Suzhou) can monitor and control the flow of products/materials between Fuji Xerox (China), logistics partners and recycling partners. The system enables unifying management of how many and what kind of products have been recovered, as well as weight before/after disassembling and separating those products, which deters illegal disposal.

The integrated recycling system was accomplished with the cooperation and trusts of the Chinese government as well as 10 recycling partners in China and four in Japan. The system improves the resource recycling rate to achieve “zero landfill,” “no pollution” and “no illegal disposal,” (1) complying with Chinese laws; (2) collecting used products and cartridges under the responsibility of Fuji Xerox; and (3) through disassembling/separation as well as proper treatment of hazardous materials.

In addition to reducing environmental risk such as illegal disposal, contamination and pollution, the system will provide China with benefits including utilizing recycled materials and spurring a new industry model.

Fuji Xerox Eco-Manufacturing (Suzhou) thoroughly disassembles recovered cartridges to a component level, and those that are judged to be equal in quality to new through quality assurance inspections will be introduced into a cartridge production line, and others that cannot be reused will be returned to raw material.

As one of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts, Fuji Xerox formulated a product recycling policy in 1995 that promotes resource-recycling aiming at “zero landfill,” and achieved “zero landfill” of used products in Japan in August 2000. In December 2004, Fuji Xerox established an integrated recycling system based in Thailand that recovers used products from nine countries and regions in Asia Pacific, achieving “zero landfill” in the region.

Then in China, as a part of international resources recycling network, Fuji Xerox recycles products by recovering used products and reusing components, with the aim of “zero landfill,” “no pollution,” and “no illegal disposal.”
