Bertz Design Group Receives Mohawk Windpower Award for Work With Darwin Professional Underwriters

Thursday 03. January 2008 - Bertz Design Group, Middletown, Connecticut, has been recognized by Mohawk Fine Papers Inc. for its sustainability initiatives.

Bertz Design Group’s recent work for Darwin Professional Underwriters has earned them the Mohawk Windpower Partnership Award. This award was presented to Bertz for their efforts in making more socially responsible choices. Bertz Design recently chose Mohawk Options 100% PC White paper for use in Darwin’s 2006 annual report. “Bertz Design has helped their client work towards meeting their sustainability goals as well as participate in this world-wide movement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Using Mohawk Options is one small choice that can have a huge impact in the effort to conserve our world,” says Joseph O’Connor, Sr. Vice President Sales, Corporate Accounts.
The difference Bertz Design has made is significant, as evidenced by the environmental calculations below, which quantify their decision to use Mohawk Options, made with electricity generated by renewable windpower.
Environmental Savings Achieved by Bertz Design
5,000 pounds — Mohawk Options 100% PC White

Savings derived from using post-consumer recycled fiber in lieu of virgin
fiber:

48 trees preserved for future use 138 lbs. waterborne
waste not created

2,256 lbs. solid waste not generated 20,389 gallons
water/wastewater flow saved

34,000,000 BTUs energy not consumed 4,442 lbs. net
greenhouse gases prevented

2,308 lbs. air emissions not generated 156 trees planted

Currently, 100% of the electricity used by Mohawk Fine Papers is offset with certified windpower certificates. “Continuing to offer our customers the most environmentally conscientious papers will remain the highest priority for Mohawk,” says O’Connor.
The Mohawk Windpower Partnership Award was launched nationally in 2006. This is one of many programs launched by Mohawk to raise awareness for corporate sustainability issues. A pioneer on the recycled paper front, in 2003, Mohawk became the first paper mill in the U.S. to use renewable, non-polluting wind energy for manufacturing and the first U.S. mill to offset the thermal energy emissions associated with the production of select paper brands, thus effectively making the paper carbon neutral.
Mohawk’s environmental calculator is another industry first: this online, interactive tool enables customers to calculate the savings achieved when they choose environmentally friendly paper. Mohawk is also the first U.S. paper mill to offer Green Seal-certified papers and continues to offer the widest variety of Green Seal-certified papers available from one mill. Finally, Mohawk received the EPA’s Green Power Leadership Partner of the Year Award in October of 2007.
