Harland Simon to upgrade Goss Uniliner Press Controls at Butler Eagle, PA.

Friday 27. November 2015 - Harland Simon has been selected to supply a controls upgrade to the Goss Uniliner press at Butler Eagle Printing, PA, in collaboration with Goss. This is the latest joint project between the controls and press specialists, who have got a long history of working together in Europe. In the Americas, this working partnership has also benefited customers including The New York Post, NY; El Mercurio, Chile and more recently, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

The new project at Butler Eagle involves replacement of the obsolete MPU with a PC based system which interfaces to the existing HDLC network, thus controlling the on-unit ink, damp and registration [Z808 & 859] cards. In addition to the MPU upgrade, Harland Simon will provide 22″ press control touch screens for mounting on each Bargraph quality desk [see photo].

As with all Harland Simon offerings, the existing system will remain operational until the new equipment has been fully tested and commissioned, which eliminates any risk to production. This method also keeps costs down while ensuring all the vulnerable parts of the system are replaced. The solution will be based on techniques that have been successfully developed for the replacement of many systems originally supplied by other press and drives manufacturers over the past 40 years.

John Staiano, Managing Director – Americas, for Harland Simon, commented, “The press control screens and system architecture have been designed in such a way that it will be possible, at a later date, to expand the system and incorporate the replacement of these Z808 and 859 cards either as one project or unit-by-unit to Ethernet based controllers.”

This upgrade follows on from other successful Goss Universal upgrades in North America, Europe and around the World and the recent order to upgrade the same generation of controls on the Goss Universal press at La Prensa-Panama.

Phil Tilley, district sales manager, Goss ?Americas, also commented on the project: “The partnership? between Goss International and Harland Simon combines our leading technology with Harland Simon’s expertise to ensure our customers get the most out of their press long-term.”
