Digital Media Europe 2015: Media for Millennials, Data Strategy and More

Monday 16. March 2015 - The Danish tabloid Ekstra Bladet has committed itself to creating two new businesses every year. Meanwhile, the pure-play digital publication Business Insider Europe has just received US$ 25 million from investors and is growing fast within a competitive market.

These two companies are among the cases to be examined at Digital Media Europe 2015, Europe’s premier digital news media gathering where leading media executives present their strategies and reveal where they plan to focus their efforts in coming months.
Digital Media Europe, organized by the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA), is expected to draw more than 250 international senior publishing executives to London from 20 to 22 April for three days of presentations, workshops and innovative sessions. Poul Madsen, the Editor-in-chief of Ekstra Bladet, says the company promised its Board that it would create two new businesses every year. “We’re going to start up a radio station […] and we’ve created the Danish Buzzfeed,” he says.
He will be joined in a session on Top 5 Digital Priorities by Julian Childs, the Managing Director for UK and Europe for Business Insider, who will discuss what makes this pure-player so attractive to investors, and by Lockhart Steele, Editorial Director of Vox Media in the United States.
Five themes will define DME15: Media for Millenials; Programmatic Advertising; Data Strategy; Media Measurement; and Video. Other presentations include:
— “USA Today has probably changed more in the last two years than in its previous 30”, says the Poynter Institute. Steve Elfers, Managing Editor of Multimedia at USA Today, will tell how they have made video a priority in this transformation.
— Media outlets want to reach the always-on, video-consuming, digital native millennial generation – but how? Greg Dybec, Managing Editor of Elite Daily, will discuss how this “voice of generation Y” attracts more than 43 million unique visits monthly, with half its traffic coming from Facebook.
— Annika Jimenez, Vice President of Privotal Data Labs, is among the “15 Enterprise Tech Rock Stars You’ve Never Heard of But Should Know”. She is at the forefront of Big Data implementation across industries and will give her views on big data strategies for media companies.
— Ashwin Sridhar, Vice President of Online Advertising at Economist.com, and Head of The Economist’s publisher network, Ideas People Media, will talk about how The Economist’s advertising offering is evolving to reflect the changing needs of clients.
— From experiments with computer vision, game mechanics and future interfaces to new data visualiation tools for journalists, the NYC Media Lab is working with a range of news and media companies in partnership with engineering, computer science and design faculty and students at New York City universities. Executive Director Justin Hendrix will discuss several of the Lab’s projects with corporate members including Hearst Corporation and NBCUniversal and will examine how media companies are organising themselves to take advantage of new technologies.
